Highlights
- The Rock brought back his famous Rock Concert segment on SmackDown, serenading Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins with humorous jabs.
- A female fan flashed the camera during The Rock's performance, prompting a blackout and an amused reaction from The Rock himself.
- Despite his heel persona, The Rock's concert segment was entertaining and reminiscent of his previous iconic performances.
The Rock opened SmackDown again this week, but this time he wasn't flanked by the rest of The Bloodline, he was all by himself. Well, not quite by himself. A couple of musicians joined him as The People's Champ revived his famous Rock Concert segment. Serenading Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins with a performance that tore the two of them to shreds, it seems someone in the SmackDown crowd enjoyed The Rock's performance a little too much.
Cut The Feed!
Those of you who watched along live may have noticed that at one point during Rock's performance, the camera cut out and you couldn't hear anything. Don't worry, it wasn't just you, nor was it a technical problem on the network's end. The brief blackout was intentional as apparently, a female fan waited for the camera to be on her before deciding to flash The Rock.
WWE Smackdown Winners and Losers: Cody and Roman Play Their Hands
This week's SmackDown ended with a long promo segment that saw both Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes show their respective hands.First or second hour of SmackDown, that's naturally not something Fox or WWE will want to show on camera. This isn't DX in the Attitude Era convincing women to do that to simultaneously entertain fans and get under the network's skin. It also explains why when the feed cut back in, Rock was visibly amused and talking to someone in the audience, laughing as he said they were someone he could love because they're "drunk and horny".
The Rock's Concerts
The segment was an homage to the Rock Concert The Great One performed for Stone Cold ahead of their third and final WrestleMania match in 2003. The second time he dusted off the idea might be even more famous, doing it for Vickie Guerrero and saying some truly terrible/hilarious things. I'm not sure last night's concert stands up to the quality of that one, but it was still amusing and worked as intended.
As for it fitting The Rock's new heel persona, that I'm not so sure about. Rock is a fantastic heel, and he was saying some heelish things, but when he does it in song, it's impossible not to love him. The promo he cut and posted on social media disparaging Rhodes was far more heelish. Rock has been posting long promos cutting down The American Nightmare ahead of SmackDown almost every week, and his tag match against Rhodes and Seth Rollins where he will team with Reigns at WrestleMania 40 is now official.
