What Happened Between Olivia & Spencer Over The Summer?
What happened between Spencer and Olivia during the summer before All American season 3? The first episode teases they might've finally hooked up.
The All American season 3 premiere raised a major question: What happened between Spencer and Olivia over the summer? The CW's football drama based on Spencer Paysinger's real-life gained a bigger fanbase with season 2's launch on Netflix in 2020. After season 2 focused on the spring of the main character's junior year of high school, All American season 3 skips past the summer. However, the beginning of the new story teased something happened between Olivia and Spencer during this time.At the end of All American season 2, Olivia and Spencer were on very good terms. Spencer was there for Olivia when she felt abandoned by the rest of her family, and Olivia was the only one who knew Spencer was still having problems with his arm after the recent shooting. When All American season 3 begins, though, Olivia and Spencer are distant. The show quickly establishes that it has been a few weeks since they've spoken, and there is clearly something in the past that caused the awkwardness between them. Olivia and Spencer tip-toe around the past events and reference giving each other space could be for the best. And yet, the All American season 3 premiere ends with Spencer asking Olivia if they're ever going to talk about what happened - but what did happen?
The separation between Olivia and Spencer happened only a few weeks ago in regard to when the third season begins. All American season 3's first episode teases the location of the event, as a trip to Las Vegas is mentioned repeatedly. Several of the characters went to Las Vegas to see Coop perform on the tour Layla put together, and this was two weeks ago, which should be right around the time that Olivia and Spencer stopped speaking to each other. Olivia told Layla that she couldn't go to Las Vegas because she had to help a Sober Sister, but All American season 3 eventually confirms this isn’t true. This was teased by Olivia forgetting about her lie until Layla mentioned it again. The reason for Olivia lying about not going to Las Vegas is due to it being a secret visit to see Spencer. Olivia and Spencer didn’t hook up as most viewers originally suspected, though. Spencer told Olivia that he had feelings for her, which she didn’t know how to deal with. She left Las Vegas for a surprise trip to see Asher, which also didn’t go well for her.
The romantic feelings between Spencer and Olivia are something All American teased in the past, especially with the hot tub scene in season 2. And since season 2 ended with them together during potential crises, it isn't too surprising that those feelings would grow. However, it was really the time in Vegas together and being at Simone and Jordan’s wedding that made Spencer realize how he really felt about Olivia. She couldn’t immediately reciprocate those feelings because she was still dating Asher at the time. Olivia effectively rejecting Spencer’s feelings took her down a darker path as she thought Asher cheated on her while in Mexico.
While the All American season 3 premiere led many to believe Olivia was the girl Spencer hooked up with, the show later confirmed that this was Layla. Spencer had only confessed his feelings for Olivia a few minutes before Layla arrived back at the room and told Spencer she was ready to move their relationship forward. Spencer quickly moving from Olivia to Layla certainly wasn’t the best move for anyone, as his suppressed feelings for Olivia eventually led to him and Layla breaking up. Spencer and Olivia’s secret summer may have been the root of some drama in All American season 3, but it also allowed the story to later progress to a point that the two of them could explore a possible romance in season 4.
