The Undertaker's Streak Almost Ended At WrestleMania 25 In Strange & Brutal Fashion

The Undertaker's match with Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XXV is often regarded as one of the greatest in WWE history.

Mr. WrestleMania put up quite the fight against the Deadman, who entered the show with a flawless 16-0 career record at WrestleMania. The fans in Houston, Texas were treated to, by far, the greatest WrestleMania performance in Undertaker's illustrious career.

But one giant botch from The Undertaker almost turned this WrestleMania classic into an all time dud. And even though it wasn't the planned finish, the Heartbreak Kid was this close to putting an end to Undertaker's streak.

You may recall the moment where Undertaker attempted a suicide dive over the top ropes on Michaels. But the Phenom accidentally took out the cameraman, and he took a scary headfirst landing.

And that one botch almost led to the end of Undertaker's WrestleMania streak.

Marty Elias, who served as the referee for that unforgettable match, shared some interesting details during an interview on Talk Is Jericho (h/t Paul Davis of WrestlingNews.co).

Elias said that Undertaker suffered a concussion and broken pinky. The Deadman also told Elias "if I don’t make it back in, you shoot count me out." Complicating matters was the fact that Elias' earpiece was broken, so officials backstage couldn't give him any instructions.

Michaels ran over and talked to the referee, apparently pleading him to start the 10-second count. But Elias said that HBK was actually telling him to take his time on it, and after nine seconds, Undertaker barely managed to slip back into the ring.

The show went on, and Undertaker was able to score the pinfall victory over Michaels to move his streak to 17-0. Five years later, Brock Lesnar would infamously end the streak in (fortunately) clean fashion, moving Undertaker's WrestleMania record to 21-1.

All Is Well That Ends Well

Thankfully for everybody, Undertaker managed to fight through and continue the match like the warrior he is. It would have been a historic disappointment if his match ended via count out, even by accident. And just think about what would have happened if he didn't avoid the 10-count. Where would Lesnar be now in WWE if he wasn't the one who ended Undertaker's streak? Thankfully, these questions will forever remain unanswered, because the Phenom was able to finish the match as planned.
