The Infamous Super Dragon Wrestler Chant, Explained

Quick Links

Remember when Steve Austin debuted his "WHAT?" chant all the way back in the glory age of WWE? It was cool, hilarious, and fitting for a badass like "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. With one word, Austin was able to let his opponents know that he didn’t give a damn what they had to say. After he introduced this catchphrase in 2001, he kept saying it over and over and over again, and for some reason, it never truly lost the charm. Probably because it was "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.

Steve Austin drove his enemies mad with that one word, and it was entertaining as all heck but eventually. Of course, fans started chanting "WHAT?" too. It was somewhat funny at first, but then it happened again and again and got annoying real quick.

The Story Behold The Most Annoying Chant in Pro Wrestling History

Wrestlers began to lash out at the fans for disrupting their promos and there is a whole compilation on WWE’s YouTube channel about wrestlers shutting the chant down. The Undertaker in particular retorted with an excessively nasty rebuttal when fans tried hijacking his promo.

Next up, there was the "CM Punk" chant. When Punk walked out of the WWE in 2014, fans voiced their displeasure by chanting his name in every arena around the world. Initially, it made sense, but one year later, two years later, heck, even half a decade later and fans were still chanting his name. Once again, wrestlers started battling back. Stephanie McMahon, in particular, took great delight in shutting down the "CM Punk" chants.

That said, as annoying as "WHAT?" and "CM Punk" became, the honor of the most annoying chant in pro wrestling belongs to something else. This particular chant originated from the indie scene, but as one of the most popular pro wrestling memes around, you’ll hear it in a smart-heavy WWE arena as well. We are of course referring to the infamous “SUPER DRAGON” chant.

For a bit of backstory, Super Dragon is actually an accomplished indie wrestler. His real name is Daniel Lyon, and he has competed in a number of different promotions such as CZW and Revolution Pro. Currently, he is a co-owner of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and this is where our story begins.

In 2003, PWG was hosting a multi-man tournament dubbed “Bad Ass Mother 3000” to decide the first PWG world champion. Lyon was a part of this tournament and in his first match, he was set to wrestle Hook Bomberry. This tournament took place in a very small space and the crowd was comprised of just a couple dozen wrestling fans. Hook and Lyon began to wrestle, and in order to encourage the latter, the crowd began to chant “Super Dragon” as he was the babyface in the feud.

Eventually, the crowd stopped chanting, but one dude kept going all alone. He was clearly a massive fan of Super Dragon as went on and on, chanting "Super Dragon" and then following it up by clapping three times, rinse and repeat. The other fans grew sick of the repetition real quick and battled back, chanting "Shut the **** up" in an attempt to silence the super fan.

Said super fan refused to be silenced, and he carried on, outlasting the entirety of the arena, all by himself. By that point, even the wrestlers took notice of the annoyance and the man himself, Daniel Lyon, AKA Super Dragon, left the ring to take care of the disturbance.

You’d think Hook would be the guy to silence that one fan, but it was actually the titular character himself. Lyon exited the ring and came face-to-face with his biggest fan, clearly not happy. Hilariously, the fan chanted it one more time and the wrestler jumped the guardrail and looked ready to attack. He even grabbed a steel chair to whack the fan on the head, but thankfully the guy sat down and stopped chanting. The referee had to intervene, bringing Lyon away from the crowd and back into the ring.

The crowd gave Daniel Lyon a standing ovation for silencing the annoying chant, and he went on to win the match. That is the power of insistent support, people. Super Dragon is an eternal meme within the Internet Wrestling Community. It is by far the most annoying chant ever echoed in any wrestling arena, and was so infuriating that the wrestler himself got offended.
