Pokémon: How Do You Pronounce Arceus
Pokémon Legends: Arceus has raised the old debate over the pronunciation of the Mythical Arceus name, with many flipping between a soft and hard "c".
The upcoming release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus has many fans debating the pronunciation of Mythical Pokémon Arceus' name. Due to inconsistencies of pronunciation in games, movie trailers, and language translations, many have been left unsure which way is correct. Thankfully, due to recent trailers for Pokémon Legends: Arceus, as well as new items, it is possible players may finally have the answer.
The Pokémon series is filled with interesting pronunciations for Pokémon names. For example, the Legendary Pokémon Regice can be said as "Regi-Ice" or as "Reg-ice" while Legendary Suicune has had its name said as "Su-EE-coon" and "Su-EYE-coon". While some of these issues are simply from a lack of voice-acted pronunciation in earlier games, translations can also have a big role to play in Pokémon, with Japanese names and sounds and their English equivalents not always being vocalized in the same ways.
In recent updates, Pokémon Legends: Arceus has helped shed light on how Mythical Arceus' name is really meant to be said. According to recent trailers for the game, "ARK-ee-us", and not "AR-see-us", is the correct pronunciation. This has been backed with trailer narration for Legends: Arceus, as well as the "Ark" phone, which bears a striking resemblance to Arceus and seems to run on the Mythical Pokémon's power. The main reason for the confusion came from early inclusions of Arceus in the Pokémon anime television shows and movies starring Ash, where it was originally said with the soft "c" sound. In Japanese, Arceus' name in Katakana translates to "A-Ru-Se-U-Su", likely causing much of the original confusion on how it would be said in English.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus Could Clarify Other Mysteries
In addition to helping fans with Arceus' pronunciation, Pokémon Legends: Arceus could also uncover the origins of the Pokédex and Poké Balls. Throughout the current main series Pokémon games, the information on these plot-important items has remained scarce. Players know they must fill the Pokédex to help with the research done by Pokémon professors, and that Poké Balls somehow turn Pokémon into glowing, red material that can be stored in a capsule, but the science behind these devices remains vague. Because players in Pokémon Legends: Arceus will be filling the Pokédex and crafting Poké Balls, it is possible the workings of both will be revealed, offering a better understanding of the lore of the series.
Thankfully, players won't need to wait long to begin their journey through the historic Sinnoh, now called Hisui, region. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set to release on January 28, 2022, for the Nintendo Switch console, with new information dropping regularly in teaser trailers. Players will be able to ride Pokémon through open-world-inspired areas, battle seamlessly in the overworld, and encounter ancient Hisuian form Pokémon species not available in Diamond and Pearl's modern Sinnoh. The new mechanics seen in Pokémon Legends: Arceus will likely reveal much more than Mythical Arceus' correct name pronunciation, and could potentially expose the true abilities of the real "god" Pokémon.
