Nebula Actor Casts Doubt On Her MCU Future After Wrapping GOTG Vol 3
On her final day of filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, actress Karen Gillan voices uncertainty about the return of Nebula for future MCU films.
Karen Gillan's final day on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 brings uncertainty as the Nebula actress casts doubt regarding the character's return for future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. The film is shaping up to be an emotional conclusion for the entire Guardians team, who lost Gamora at the hands of Thanos in Infinity War and must search for her time-jumped version while contending with a mighty new threat, Adam Warlock. Supposedly, Guardians 3 will also focus on Gamora and Nebula's relationship, though the context of this exploration is still unclear.
Both director James Gunn and star Dave Bautista (playing Drax the Destroyer) say that they will exit the franchise after Guardians 3, leaving the possibility of subsequent ventures up in the air. Gunn himself went further, saying that he is unlikely to return for more Marvel projects. Principal photography on Guardians 3 will reportedly wrap very soon, so with the departures of Gunn and Bautista and an uncertain tomorrow for the franchise, the last day of filming should be a stirring one. But not everybody is prepared to leave, particularly Gillan, who wants to reprise her role as Nebula even after Guardians 3.
That desire may be fleeting if Gillan's recent Instagram post is any indication. She confirms that she has wrapped filming on the character and shares an image of her personalized director's chair with a glove on it, presumably the one used to cover Nebula's cybernetic hand. Gillan then says, "I don't know if Nebula will return beyond this, it's possible that this is her final chapter." In a loving thank you to Gunn, she also states that Nebula is the character she has enjoyed playing the most. Check out the post below:

Nebula was somewhat of a breakout role for Gillan, at least to US audiences, so she is unsurprisingly attached to the Guardian on a deep level, making this post all the more heartwarming. And her appreciation for Gunn is no secret either, gifting him quirky Charlie Chaplin-inspired artwork for the Guardians 3 wrap and generally showering him with adulation. Due to the threequel's position as the supposed final showing for this iteration of the Guardians team, the actress has cause to question her character's return, but Marvel has a habit of bringing people back, as most recently seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home. There is also a chance that Nebula dies, potentially hinted at by Gillan's heartfelt message.
It is difficult to decipher the character's fate by this one post, though it does seem ominous. Press for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has hinted at one major death, which could be Nebula given the character's turbulent arc. Then again, Gillan could merely be emotional due to her attachment to the character and franchise. But her interest in a spinoff series about Nebula's backstory - instead of future adventures - could further suggest that the galactic cyborg meets her untimely demise.
