Jamie Hayter's Career Shows That She Truly Earned The AEW Women's Championship
Quick Links
Before Jamie Hayter became the AEW Women's World Champion she spent time on the independent scene, but it didn't go about the way most British wrestlers make their name known. Jamie's connection with the AEW fans has been unmatched by nearly everyone in the division. She captured the championship after beating long time friend Toni Storm and her fans are more than proud of her to say the least.
Jamie Hayter Makes A Name For Herself In The UK And Japan's Stardom
Jamie started her career like most wrestlers, on the independent scene. In the UK, promotions like Progress Wrestling and ICW tend to be the biggest breeding grounds for the brightest UK wrestlers to be picked up by the big American companies. Jamie’s journeys through the UK independents saw her primarily wrestle in Pro Wrestling Eve and Rev Pro. One of Jamie’s earliest matches was from South Coast Wrestling’s First Anniversary show where she was defeated by Jinny Couture. In fact, even before making her Pro Wrestling Eve debut, while wrestling on small UK independent shows, she’d face off against the former AEW Women’s World Champion, Thunder Rosa, in a tag team match.
This opportunity for Hayter came after she competed at their NYC event during WrestleMania 34 weekend to join the roster. She was in the middle of working her day job and received a call that caught her by surprise. Only 23-years-old at the time when she was offered a spot on the Stardom roster, she immediately put her notice in at her job and the life long joshi fan began life as a full time wrestler.
Jamie would find her footing in the wrestling business and started to create some worldwide buzz around her name once debuting in Japan. She competed in block A of the 2018 5-Star Grand Prix for Stardom. While she didn't win the 5-Star Grand Prix, ending with 5 points, only a few months later, in early 2019, she would join the Oedo Tai faction.
Through her association with Bea Priestly, they would become the first foreigners to win the Goddess of Stardom Championships, the promotions tag team titles. The winning wouldn't stop there, because a week later Hayter would win the SWA Undisputed Women’s World Championship, defeating Utami Hayashishita. Unfortunately, she had to vacate this championship in September 2020 because of COVID-19 traveling restrictions. During this time of not being able to get back into Japan she was a part of a NXT UK tryout and even appeared on the television show facing off against Piper Niven, also known as WWE’s Doudrop.

Jamie Hayter Joins AEW
In 2019, Hayter’s world would change as she was finally brought into the fold of AEW due to the connection between herself and Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D after a match they had at Pro Wrestling Eve. Hayter even wrestled in AEW twice before officially signing against Britt Baker and teaming with Emi Sakura on Dynamite. Jamie officially signed with AEW in August 2021, being hand-picked by Tony Khan after seeing her perform in the company and outside the AEW bubble, continuously wrestling in the UK independent scene and Japan.
Jamie quickly aligned herself with the top of the women’s division and champion at the time, Britt Baker, and Rebel. This trio of women would become the “mean girls” of AEW and this partnering would increase Britt’s title reign by now having some muscle to weaken her opponents. This allowed Hayter to be a featured character every week on Dynamite as a part of Baker’s act and put her in position to wrestle high profile matches.
Soon enough, the AEW fans who didn't know Hayter prior to her joining the company would see what her fans already knew. At this point, Hayter had competed against the best of the AEW women’s division, competing in the TBS Championship Tournament, the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament, and even challenging for the AEW Women’s World Championship. She grew a cult-like following in AEW of fans that wanted her to step away from being in Baker’s shadow and capture the championship.

Jamie Hayter Becomes The AEW Women's World Champion
After not winning the championship in a fatal 4 way match at All Out against Hikaru Shida, Baker, and then champion Toni Storm, it was time she challenged for the title one-on-one again. This would happen at Full Gear as two former friends who lived together during the pandemic would clash of AEW’s top women’s title. In the end, and with the assistance of Britt Baker, Hayter would pull off the biggest win of her career, finally capturing the AEW Interim Women’s World Championship.
She would officially be recognized as the AEW Women's World Champion on Dynamite as Thunder Rosa officially vacated the title. Hayter’s climb to the championship had finally peaked, and we’re excited to see how the next chapter of her career unfolds!
