The viral Untold horror movie on Netflix has become an internet sensation on TikTok, but many have come to question whether it is even real. Netflix has long been the home of great horror content, and every year, dozens of new and classic films are added to the preeminent streamer. While other sites have risen in recent years that cater exclusively to horror fanatics, Netflix still reigns supreme in every category because of the streamer's widespread appeal and access to some of the biggest films of the past and present. The rising popularity of horror has also made it easier for indie horror films to get more attention online.
Horror fans, more so than any other genre, are constantly on the lookout for hidden gems that may have slipped through the cracks upon initial release. Though accessibility of horror has gone up, the unending deluge of available streaming content often obscures great films that have a hard time pushing their way to the surface in a sea of other movies. As such, great modern horror films go unseen, and horror hounds around the globe thought they had hit the mother lode when they learned about the supposed horror hidden gem, Untold, streaming on Netflix.
The Untold Horror Movie Isn't Real
Viewers first became aware of Untold thanks to TikTok user Mr. Movie who uploaded a now-viral video where he explains everything he knows about the supposed spooky movie. With a poster for the film as a background, Mr. Movie talks all about the film which was supposedly added to the site in March 2023. He explains that Untold is so scary that, according to a Netflix report he has on hand, almost every viewer shuts the movie off at exactly 9 minutes and 45 seconds in. He warned viewers that he continued past that point, and saw the scariest horror flick he's ever witnessed.
Unfortunately for horror fans looking for their latest thrill, Netflix's Untold horror movie is a total fabrication dreamed up by Mr. Movie himself, a noted movie parody account who has posted many such spoof videos. A keen-eyed observer could quickly pick up on the clues in the video such as the fact that the so-called "Netflix report" is actually a piece of paperwork from a cat clinic with the vet's letterhead clearly visible in the shot. Also, a quick perusal of Mr. Movie's page would reveal other fake movie reviews such as the erroneous Brad Pitt vehicle Joe's Noodles.
There's Been Other Fake Netflix Content: Shmunguss Explained
Echoing the classic sentiment to "never trust anything on the internet", the Untold horror movie isn't even the only fake Netflix viral sensation on TikTok. Going beyond just a single movie, the so-called Schmunguss category on Netflix nearly broke the internet in 2023, in which a user supposedly found a mysterious category on the streaming service that featured a myriad of movies with Schmunguss in the title. A bit easier to spot as a fake, the category was an obvious forgery, but it continued the trend of spoofed Netflix movies and categories being extolled on the social media platform.
