- Cody's influence and impact on the industry have been significant, contributing to the current boom in wrestling and paving the way for legitimate competition to WWE.
Cody Rhodes has been around the professional wrestling scene since he was a young boy. His father being Dusty Rhodes meant he grew up in a shadow that would have been hard for anyone to get out of. But, The American Nightmare is quickly cementing himself as an icon of his own, not just worthy of being considered someone who did well to fill the shoes of the American Dream, but arguably is becoming a legend that could, one day, surpass what his father was able to accomplish.
During a Reddit Ask Me Anything session on Monday, Rhodes spent time answering questions from fans. One question revolved around his legacy and what he wanted to be known for in the professional wrestling industry. When you look back at the past few years of his career, his answer makes a lot of sense. Asked, "Cody, thanks for doing this and I saw you at a house show in the UK earlier this year. When you retire, what do you want your legacy to be?" His response was fascinating.

Cody said, "(I would hope and be very lucky for this to be true but also I have had amazing partners and teammates throughout) The one in my generation who did the absolute most at moving our game into the stratosphere of mainstream entertainment!" He added, "A lot of the "left turns" and big gambles I have taken were for that very purpose. The healthiest wrestling and sports entertainment have ever been is now. Let's keep going!"
When you see what Cody has done, this answer should surprise no one. Cody left WWE because he wasn't happy with the path his career was taking. That alone was a risk as he left the biggest company in the world, one in which he was virtually guaranteed a solid paycheck. He toured the independent scene quickly making a name for himself as the biggest star not working for WWE, then helped launch All In, proving that an indie promotion could sell out an arena. He was right, then he worked with Tony Khan and The Young Bucks to create All Elite Wrestling, where he was an executive producer and largely responsible for that company's success until he returned to WWE, citing personal issues within AEW.
Cody Has Changed The Game
Cody noted that wrestling is experiencing a boom and he's elated to be a part of it. That he's been so influential in that boom proves that what he wants out of his legacy, he just might achieve. Few figures have made an impact on the industry and changed the game the way Cody has in the last decade. That's there is even more than one company beyond WWE that has a chance to be called legitimate competition is largely due to Cody spreading his wings and proving something few thought was possible.
