Bret Hart Discusses Dynamite Kid's Addictions, Abusive Nature

On a recent episode of Confessions Of The Hitman, WWE Hall Of Famer Bret Hart discussed the late Dynamite Kid who died in 2018 at the age of 60. Although Hart recognizes the British wrestler’s talent, he has a hard time overlooking his abusive nature and addictions.

According to Hart, Dynamite was so hopped up on pain medication during a match in Hamilton, Canada in 1986, that he didn’t even realize it when he blew out two discs in his back. After being taken to the hospital, he was told he’d never wrestle again. Ignoring the doctor’s advice, the wrestler kept wrestling as a part of the tag team The British Bulldogs with Davey Boy Smith.

In 1987, The British Bulldogs dropped the WWF Tag Team Championship title to The Hart Foundation in a match in which Dynamite could barely walk due to back surgery. Hart says he’s grateful to the wrestler for accepting defeat. As time went on, Dynamite’s drinking and drug abuse got worse and he ultimately left WWF.

Hart recalled that when he and his family went to visit Dynamite, he was drinking vodka straight out of the bottle and shooting rabbits in his yard. Despite his struggles, Dynamite continued wrestling until 1996 even though his body became emaciated due to cocaine and alcohol abuse.

His final wrestling match took place on 10 October 1996 in Japan where he promoted as part of a Legends of High-Flying six-man tag. At the airport the next day, he suffered a seizure and was taken to the hospital.

Hart says that Dynamite "was bitter, sour, angry at the world” and often took out his frustrations on others. Hart says that in their first matches, the wrestler often lost control. “He busted my face open with an elbow smash, he busted my nose open, and he kicked me in the face one time,” Harts says.

In 1997, as a result of the numerous back and leg injuries he suffered throughout his career, Dynamite lost the use of his left leg and was dependent on a wheelchair. He died on 5 December 2018, the day he turned 60. Although the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed, the BBC reported that his death was related to his health issues.
