Bernard Hearon

Professional Background

Dr. Bernard Hearon is Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita where he also serves as Associate Orthopaedic Residency Program Director for Research. In his present position, Dr. Hearon supports orthopaedic attending faculty research activities and directs orthopaedic resident staff research projects.

Dr. Hearon received his undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana and his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his orthopaedic residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas and subsequently was a fellow in hand and upper extremity reconstructive surgery and microsurgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. After his fellowship, Dr. Hearon served as Chief of the Orthopaedic Hand Surgery Service at Wilford Hall Medical Center.

In 1994, Dr. Hearon joined Advanced Orthopaedic Associates in Wichita, where he practiced upper extremity orthopaedics until his retirement from clinical practice in 2019. During his 25-year tenure, he served in physician leadership roles at the Kansas Surgery and Recovery Center where he was Chairman of the Quality Assurance Committee and Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee. He is one of few orthopaedists to hold American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery certifications in general orthopaedics, hand surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hearon has been a mentor to many health care professionals including athletic trainers, physical therapists, physician assistants, medical students, family practice and orthopaedic surgery residents. He has held adjunct faculty teaching positions at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, at the University of Arizona in Tucson and at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. Now, as a member of the Kansas University Medical Center teaching faculty, he continues to mentor medical students and to provide didactic sessions and research guidance for orthopaedic residents.
