10 Times The Wrong Wrestler Won The Briefcase

Money in the Bank is one of the popular pay-per-views of WWE. Given Money in the Bank of this year is just a week away, the anticipation is rising high, and a number of big matches are set for the show. Moreover, it is the very first pay-per-view after WrestleMania.

Even though the Money in the Bank match began in 2005, it became a pay-per-view in 2010. Over the past fifteen years, a number of Superstars won the prestigious briefcase. While a majority of the winners cashed in the contract successfully, a couple of names also had failed attempts.

10 Damien Sandow

Yes, it might be unfathomable, but Damien Sandow actually won the Money in the Bank briefcase once in his career, possibly his only major accomplishment in WWE. Sandow won the ladder match in 2013 and received an opportunity to cash in on the World Heavyweight Champion.

Sandow waited for a few months to cash in the Money in the Bank contract. On an episode of Raw, he cashed it on the World Heavyweight Champion John Cena but failed to win the match. WWE certainly made a huge blunder by making Sandow a Money in the Bank winner.

9 Sheamus

Having altered his look, Sheamus returned after a long hiatus in 2015. Although the Celtic Warrior was a big name of the roster, he didn't have much momentum. Therefore, he should have built good momentum before receiving a spot in the main event scene.

Sheamus won Money in the Bank briefcase in 2015.

Eventually, he won the WWE World Championship by cashing it on Roman Reigns. However, it was a short-lived title reign, which lasted just twenty-two days. Following the defeat, Sheamus never returned to the main event scene and his abrupt push wasn't a wise move from WWE.

8 Alberto Del Rio

Alberto Del Rio enjoyed the best year of his career in 2011, winning both Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank. He also became the first man to accomplish this feat. However, the Mexican Superstar didn't succeed in capturing the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania.

After the failed attempt at the Show of Shows, Del Rio should have refrained from the WWE Championship picture instead of becoming the Money in the Bank briefcase holder. He cashed in the contract on CM Punk to win the title, but it wasn't a good reign.

7 Mr. Kennedy

Mr. Kennedy was a surprising winner of the briefcase at WrestleMania 23, where he overcame some heavyweight names of the roster. Even after winning the briefcase, Mr. Kennedy never cashed in the contract because it was eventually won by Edge.

Edge was in the actual Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 23. So, it didn't make sense for Mr. Kennedy to become the Money in the Bank winner in the first place.

6 Alexa Bliss

Alexa Bliss, the five-time Women's Champion, has some awe-inspiring accomplishments in the main roster. Other than being multi-time women's champion and two-time Tag Team Champion, The Goddess is also a former Women's Money in the Bank winner, grabbing the briefcase in 2018.

With Ronda Rousey's rise in the women's division, it was not the right time for Bliss to win Money in the Bank. Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Sasha Banks also competed in that match, and either of these three horsewomen could have benefited more by winning the Money in the Bank match.

5 Jack Swagger

Jack Swagger was one of the failed experiments of WWE in the past decade, who never reached his true potential. Winning the Money in the Bank match at WrestleMania 26, he, subsequently, became the World Heavyweight Champion by pinning Chris Jericho.

Needless to say, Swagger had a tedious run as the World Heavyweight Champion.

The Money in the Bank victory didn't help him to take his character to the next level, which WWE had expected.

4 CM Punk

CM Punk made history at WrestleMania 25, winning the Money in the Bank contract twice in a row.

As he was already gradually reaching the top of the ladder in WWE, he didn't need to win the briefcase to justify his position. After cashing in the briefcase, Punk dethroned the World Heavyweight Champion, Jeff Hardy.

3 Baron Corbin

Baron Corbin has had many ups and downs in his main roster career. Interestingly, he has never received a steady push as a top guy.

Corbin's first big break came at the 2017 Money in the Bank, where he won the briefcase. When it looked like Corbin could win his first world title, he was unsuccessful in cashing in the contract. It proved that WWE didn't know what to do with The Lone Wolf, and he wasn't ready to be a world champion.

2 Braun Strowman

Timing is a key thing of professional wrestling, and Braun Strowman, the winner of Men's Money in Bank in 2018, found it out in a hard way. Strowman was already a monster, who had chased the Universal Championship and came one step closer to winning it with the briefcase in his hands.

With Roman Reigns starting his journey as the new Universal Champion, WWE wasn't ready to give the title to Strowman. The Shield reunited, and they stopped Strowman and saved Reigns' title.

1 Brock Lesnar

Last year, WWE produced one of the worst matches in the history of Money in the Bank by crowning an unlikely winner out of nowhere. Brock Lesnar, who wasn't even part of the original match, came out at the very last minute and grabbed the briefcase without breaking a sweat.

Other participants of the match toiled hard and took bumps, only to see Lesnar stealing the victory. A different outcome could have opened the gate to build a new star.
