10 Things WWE Fans Forget About The Build Up To WrestleMania 28

WrestleMania 28 would take place in Miami, Florida on April 1st, 2012. The show would be a massive success for WWE with the main event of The Rock vs. John Cena being planned a year before WrestleMania. Other big matches on the card featured the "end of an era" match between Triple H and The Undertaker, plus CM Punk defending the WWE Championship against Chris Jericho. The show was built around the "once in a lifetime" tagline for Cena vs. Rock, but it was so successful they decided to run it back the following WrestleMania.

While everyone knows about the main event being planned a year ahead of time, many people forget about the build-up for the other matches on the card. Let's look back at a few of the storylines heading into WrestleMania and things people tend to forget about them.

10 The Rock Vs. Cena Started Before WrestleMania 27

The Rock Vs John Cena WrestleMania 27

The Rock would return to WWE on the February 14, 2011, episode of Raw to announce his role as the special guest host for WrestleMania 27. During the lead-up to the PPV, The Rock and John Cena would throw verbal insults at each other even including an Attitude Adjustment to The Rock on the March 28th Raw.

WWE was obviously planting the seeds for the main event match before WrestleMania 27 took place. The actual match wouldn't be said out loud until Monday Night Raw after WrestleMania where John Cena challenged The Rock, with The Rock proposing the match be held at WrestleMania 28.

9 The Undertaker Challenged Triple H

Undertaker vs Triple H WrestleMania 28

Unlike most challengers for The Undertaker's WrestleMania streak, Triple H wouldn't actually ask for the match to happen. The Undertaker would be left in a pretty beat-up condition after his match with The Game at WrestleMania 27, thus not wanting his lasting image to be him stretchered out of the arena.

The Undertaker would instead ask Triple H to face him again and even use the following weeks before the big event to harass and insult Triple H to get him into the match. By 2012 this would be the second feud to have reached three WrestleMania matches.

8 Triple H Initially Declined The Match

Triple H would first decline the rematch stating that he was willing to put his ego and personal agendas aside for the best of WWE. Triple H admitted that he saw The Undertaker's streak at WrestleMania as a "brand" for the company that they could cash in as a big draw.

Hunter would say he didn't want to be the one to end the streak, but after weeks of taunting from The Undertaker including calling Triple H's best friend Shawn Michaels a better wrestler, Triple H finally accepted the match and proposed it should happen inside Hell in a Cell.

7 Daniel Bryan Wanted To Cash In At The Show

Daniel Bryan would win the SmackDown Money in the Bank briefcase at the self-titled event in 2011. The following SmackDown, Bryan would state his intention to cash in his briefcase at WrestleMania.

Bryan would talk about how headlining the PPV was a dream, but his plans changed because holding the briefcase didn't guarantee him anything. Bryan would officially cash in at TLC: Tables, Ladders, & Chairs, after a match between The Big Show and Mark Henry.

6 Daniel Bryan Successfully Cashed In On SmackDown

Before the TLC PPV, Daniel Bryan would attempt to cash in on World Heavyweight Champion, Mark Henry, on an episode of SmackDown. Bryan would pin Henry and begin to celebrate with his new title before SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long came out.

Long would inform Bryan that the decision would be reversed as Mark Henry wasn't able to compete thus giving Bryan his briefcase back and Henry the title back. It would be on the following Raw where Bryan admitted he went back on his WrestleMania plans.

5 Christian Was Meant To Be On Team Johnny

Another big match for WrestleMania 28 was the multi-man tag team match between Team Johnny and Team Teddy for control of both Raw and SmackDown. The feud would start with Christian, Alberto Del Rio, and Mark Henry coming out to support John Laurinaitis in running both shows.

Christian would join Team Johnny as he was promised a World Heavyweight Championship opportunity for doing so but would have an ankle injury keeping him out of the match and thus being replaced by Drew McIntyre.

4 General Managers Swapped Shows

Before their big match at WrestleMania, both John Laurinaitis and Teddy Long would have to swap shows for a week with Johnny Ace running SmackDown and Teddy running Raw. The WWE Board of Directors would use this as a chance to evaluate who was the better General Manager.

After both shows, the Board wouldn't be able to make a decision and would then create the 12-man tag team match for WrestleMania with the winner getting control of both Raw and SmackDown.

3 Beth Phoenix Vs. Maria Menounos Started In 2009

Beth Phoenix

Beth Phoenix and Maria Menounos would have their first on-screen moment back in 2009 when Phoenix was traded to Monday Night Raw by Raw guest host Nancy O'Dell, who worked with Menounos. The two would then be a part of a six-women tag match with Menounos' team getting the victory.

The pair would see each other again at Tribute To The Troops in 2011 with Menounos again getting a victory over Phoenix in an eight-women tag. Phoenix would challenge Maria for a match at WrestleMania, with officials making it a tag match by featuring the feud between Kelly Kelly and Eve in the match.

2 Kane And Randy Orton's Handshake

Kane and Randy Orton would have a singles match against each other at WrestleMania. Many fans might have forgotten this match even happened but more would forget why it happened. Kane would attack Orton multiple times in the lead-up to the show before Orton asked Kane why he was doing this.

Kane would tell Orton that he wanted to eliminate the memory he made when he shook Orton's hand after a Street Fight the two had on SmackDown in 2011. Kane said the moment made him look weak and "human" so he wanted to beat Orton at WrestleMania to get rid of that event happening between the two.

1 Rock Vs. Cena Could Have Been For The WWE Championship

John Cena and The Rock was planned long before WrestleMania 28, but things before the show could have changed the event. John Cena became the WWE Champion at Extreme Rules and then declared his intentions to defend the championship against The Rock at WrestleMania.

Those efforts would be in vain however once John Cena lost the WWE Championship against CM Punk at Money in the Bank in July. Cena would win the title back at Night Of Champions before dropping it at Hell in a Cell the following month. Cena would focus on a short feud with Kane right before WrestleMania, leaving the championship picture behind him.
