WWE Has Expertly Protected Omos Like No Other Wrestler

WWE have always been after talents who feel larger than life, and someone that ticks that important box is the huge mountain of a man, Omos. Since his official debut, Omos has been protected more than any other wrestler on WWE's roster, and for good reason, given that he feels like a true giant in the wrestling landscape.

Big Men Don’t Always Work In WWE, But Omos Does

Despite a couple of minor stints as one of Tozawa’s ninjas, and as the bouncer for Raw Underground, Omos was an unknown commodity in professional wrestling. So when he entered by the side of AJ Styles, heads were turned. Standing at 7 foot 3 inches tall, Omos was bigger than anyone on WWE’s roster, with people backstage, especially Vince McMahon himself, likely enthralled by the fact that they had him under employment. Looking back at names such as Andre the Giant, The Great Khali, The Big Show, Diesel, WWE have always had a place at the top for talents like this.

Big men don’t always work in WWE, for example, The Great Khali. Despite having impressive size and a terrifying look, his movement in the ring was limited, and he rarely had any strong matches, something which was obvious when working in main event matches against the likes of Batista, The Undertaker, and Triple H. He was left exposed, with not much to hide his weaknesses. The complete opposite is occurring with Omos.

WWE Have Had The ‘Less Is More’ Approach With Omos

Debuting as the muscle for AJ Styles allowed Omos to be up close and personal with the talents in the ring, undoubtedly learning on the job. It was months before Omos finally wrestled on the main roster, and in that time before stepping foot into the ring, his role was perfect. He would act as protection to Styles, nonplussed and unaffected by any damage dealt towards him, helping Styles to victory with ease time and time again. Other members of the roster bumped and sold for him, even when doing the smallest of moves, which added to the aura around the giant.

With WWE waiting over three months before his first match, it allowed anticipation to build around what he could do inside the ring. With his debut coming during the Thunderdome Era, it was difficult to know whether or not his character was resonating with audiences. AJ Styles and Omos would challenge for the Raw Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania, in a feud where Omos was allowed to express some charisma and range on the mic, whilst also appearing like a monster. WWE found the right balance between comedy and seriousness when it came to Omos.

When he was tagged into the match at WrestleMania, in front of a crowd of people for the first time, any questions or worries about Omos connecting with the audience were put to bed immediately. The fans went berserk for him, with the stadium filling with electricity and roars when he began laying into The New Day members, dispatching them with ease. Even in a time when smaller wrestlers are allowed to showcase their talent on a grander scale, the larger than life athletes still feel like megastars due to their size alone, and Omos is proof of that.

If WWE Remain Patient, They Have A Future World Champion On Their Hands

In the ring, Omos has a limited moveset, but it's impactful, and his opponents make it feel much more than it is on paper. He wrestles as a typical big man, but with him currently being in a tag team with someone with the talent of Styles, it doesn’t become boring, and he’s able to take a backseat now and again, before coming in with his dominating moves. It’s a perfect formula for someone who is still young and green, working with high-profile talents, but in a way that masks his weaknesses.

Winning a title immediately in his first match on the main roster is a tell-tale sign of how WWE perceives Omos, with much bigger things likely to come in the future. There is every reason to believe that he will eventually break out from his team with Styles, and progress into becoming a world champion down the line, but until he’s ready, WWE seems settled on keeping him in a division which will help him grow, and that’s the right thing to do.

There are definitely things that need to improve in his arsenal, but that will certainly come with time. If WWE remains being patient with their approach, focusing on ‘less is more’ when it comes to Omos, they will have someone to carry them into the future, and be a giant spoken of in the same breath as Big Show and Andre The Giant. No one else in WWE currently is being treated with the same care and respect as Omos, and he feels even more special because of it.
