WWE Acknowledges Jay Briscoe On SmackDown
The wrestling world was shocked when Ring of Honor star Jay Briscoe tragically passed away in a car accident on Tuesday. The veteran had worked with numerous current WWE and AEW stars over the decades, so it came as no surprise to see the reaction from wrestlers across many promotions. That was seen on air as well, of course by AEW, but also with an announcement made by the WWE NXT commentator crew as the news first broke.WWE made another mention on the loss of Jay Briscoe on SmackDown. During the show's opening tag team contest between Sheamus and Drew McIntyre versus The Viking Raiders, Michael Cole spoke to the at home audience, saying, "We would like to send out our condolences to the family of Jay Briscoe. Jay passed away suddenly earlier this week. He and his brother Mark formed one of wrestling's great tag teams, and many here in WWE are paying their respects and sending their condolences."
Several WWE SmackDown Wrestlers Wore Armbands In Tribute To Jay Briscoe
For the tag team bout between Sheamus and Drew McIntyre versus The Viking Raiders, Erik and Ivar sported black armbands that said DEM BOYS. The Viking Raiders, then known as War Machine, had many great matches with The Briscoes in Ring of Honor. During the main event segment of SmackDown, in the contract signing between Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens, Owens came out wearing a black armband as well that said JAY. Owens, of course, wrestled for many years in Ring of Honor under the name Kevin Steen.
While The Briscoes never wrestled in a WWE ring, it shows how influential they were that a company who rarely mentions wrestlers in other promotions would go out of their way to show their support for Jay Briscoe's family.
