A photo from the set of The Witcher season 3 reveals the ridiculous number of swords used on Netflix's popular fantasy series. Based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski's book series of the same name, The Witcher follows the exploits of Geralt of Rivia, a magically enhanced monster hunter who travels across the medieval-inspired landscape known as the Continent, undertaking various quests which often include slaying imposing creatures for coin. During his travels, Geralt meets the important supporting characters Princess Ciri and Yennefer of Vengerberg.
The DCEU's Superman actor Henry Cavill leads The Witcher cast as the titular monster hunter alongside Freya Allan as Ciri, who becomes linked to Geralt through destiny, and Anya Chalotra as the powerful quarter-elf sorceress Yennefer, who falls in love with the Witcher. Developed for television by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, The Witcher season 2 premiered on Netflix in December 2021 and saw Geralt take Ciri to his childhood home of Kaer Morhen to train the young princess as a Witcher. Production on the third season is now underway and multiple looks at The Witcher season 3 set have surfaced online.
Now, the latest look at The Witcher season 3 reveals the huge amount of swords used in the Netflix series. Steve Gaub, an executive producer on The Witcher, shared an image on Instagram of the show's massive armory, which includes everything from longswords to battle axes and various other weapons. This look at the show's armory comes soon after Cavill revealed he just finished filming two weeks' worth of fight scenes for The Witcher season 3, which was a rigorous experience for the 39-year-old actor. More likely than not, Cavill used a few of the swords pictured above while filming those scenes, especially considering his reputation for doing the majority of his own stunts. Allan also likely picked up a sword or two, although Ciri will no longer be training with Geralt at Kaer Morhen, but with Yennefer at Aretuza, if the Time of Contempt novel is any indication.
Gaub's photo provides a look at the massive arsenal of medieval weapons used to create the Netflix show's fight scenes. As production on season 3 hums along over the coming months, fans should be treated to a few more interesting behind-the-scenes looks at The Witcher season 3. Unfortunately, it may be a while until the third season streams on Netflix as the live-action spinoff The Witcher: Blood Origin seems slated to premiere first, with the mainline series likely returning in late 2022 or early 2023.
