Why Was The Baker And The Beauty Cancelled?

ABC rom-com series The Baker And The Beast was a feel-good critical hit, but unfortunately, it won’t be returning for a second season – here’s why.

Here’s why there won’t be a second season of The Baker And The Beauty. ABC’s romantic comedy-drama show The Baker And The Beauty is based on the hit Israeli series Beauty And The Baker and was adapted for American television by writer, producer and Bluff City Law creator Dean Georgaris. Set in Miami, the show chronicles the whirlwind romance between world-famous supermodel Noa Hamilton (Nathalie Kelley, The Vampire Diaries) and Daniel Garcia (Victor Rasuk) – a blue-collar Cuban-American who works at his family’s bakery.

The Baker And The Beauty premiered on ABC in mid-April 2020, providing some much-needed feel-good viewing during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its Notting Hill-esque premise and heart-warming tone charmed critics, while its positive portrayal of a Latino family with an LGBTQ character (Daniel’s younger sister Natalie, played by Don’t Look Deeper's Belissa Escobedo) earned the show lots of praise and inserted some much-needed diversity into ABC’s line-up.

Unfortunately, The Baker And The Beauty didn’t last as long as its Israeli counterpart and was cancelled a couple of weeks after its season 1 finale aired. Here’s everything we know about the cancellation of The Baker And The Beauty.

The Baker And The Beauty Was Cancelled Due To Low Ratings

Despite positive reviews from critics, The Baker And The Beauty failed to connect with viewers en masse and ranked as one of ABC’s least-watched shows during its nine-episode freshman season. According to several outlets, those low ratings were the driving force behind ABC’s decision to cancel the rom-com.

The Baker And The Beauty’s Cancellation Was Controversial

The cancellation of The Baker And The Beauty meant there was a distinct lack of Latino-focused shows on not just ABC but network TV overall. Peruvian-Australian star Nathalie Kelley lambasted the move as “tone deaf”, while other The Baker And The Beauty cast members urged its fans to help save the show by signing an online petition asking for it to be picked up by another network and renewed for a second season. Despite the best efforts of its cast, crew and fans, The Baker And The Beauty failed to find another network willing to give the romantic comedy a second chance.

The Show’s Netflix Run has Given it New Hope

While The Baker And The Beauty remains cancelled, its recent popular run on Netflix has given its cast and fans new hope the streaming service might revive the show.  It wouldn’t be the first time Netflix has revived a cancelled show, having brought back shows including Lucifer and Designated Survivor in the past.

The fact The Baker And The Beauty has proved one of Netflix’s most-watched shows since it was added to the streamer’s library stands it in good stead for a revival too. However, Netflix has yet to express interest in reviving The Baker And The Beauty so the show remains cancelled for the time being, but hopefully, it might get a second season in the future.
