Vegas Season 2 Video Explains Grissom & Sara's Absences

A new video reveals how Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle’s surprising departures will be explained in the upcoming season of CSI: Vegas.

Grissom and Sara in CSI Vegas Season 1

A new video reveals how the absences of Grissom and Sara will be addressed in CSI: Vegas season 2. The update of the long-running crime procedural heads into its second installment with some very notable cast changes. It was announced last December that William Petersen would not be reprising the role of Gil Grissom, though he would remain part of the series as an executive producer. The decision came about because the actor had only agreed to appear in the first 10 episodes of the revival series.

Petersen’s exit was followed a short time later by Jorga's Fox exit, as the CSI vet confirmed that she would not be coming back as Sara Sidle. Fox said, in part, that Petersen’s absence influenced her to leave the revival — since she felt that Sara and Gil were vital to the history of CSI, as a duo, and shouldn't be separated. Many viewers of CSI: Vegas agree, which has led the popular procedural to address their exits directly.

In a new video posted by TV Line previewing CSI: Vegas season 2, which premieres September 29 on CBS, the void left by Grissom and Sara is discussed. Chris Park (Jay Lee) expresses his fanboyish surprise that Marg Helgenberger's Catherine Willows has returned to help out the team and he wonders whether she has the scoop on what Grissom and Sara have been up to. In response, Joshua Folsom (Matt Lauria) dryly mentions that Grissom and Sara are "on a boat above the arctic circle." Folsom then pokes fun at Park for his interest in gossip.

How CSI: Vegas Will Explore A Different Franchise Veteran

The big news ahead for CSI: Vegas season 2 is that Helgenberger will reprise the role of Catherine as a main cast member. The premiere episode, titled "She's Gone", sees Catherine persuade Maxine Roby (Paula Newsome) to let her rejoin the team as they investigate "the murder of a dominatrix found near her secret sex dungeon." It's also been noted, and previewed in photos, that Catherine will build a dynamic with CSI newbie Joshua. It's an approach that has worked for the procedural in the past, blending relatively fresh faces with established veterans.

The approach might actually be an improvement for CSI: Vegas season 2, as it aided the show in recovering from unexpected and surprising farewells in the past. It's particularly important going forward, as the series has lost two of the stars most closely linked to the CSI brand. But, on the other hand, as it has done numerously across its many years and iterations, the procedural mostly seems to be charging ahead by putting its focus on the next mysterious case to be solved.
