Triple H Says He's Glad The "Imaginary Ratings Battle" Narrative Is Over
It seems clear from the recent numbers being posted by both NXT and AEW in recent weeks that the ratings war was a real thing. NXT's numbers have improved, the show recently scoring their best rating of 2021 and AEW's numbers have gone up unopposed. Still, Triple H has labeled the narrative that NXT and AEW were battling in the ratings each week as "imaginary".
Speaking on a recent episode of Cheap Heat with Peter Rosenberg, Triple H said moving to Tuesdays is a big plus, specifically because “The promotional opportunity for us is much better on a Tuesday and also then not having to have a narrative where it’s just constantly about an imaginary war or this imaginary battle.” He added, “People can say what they want, but the truth of the matter is you compete against everything."
He noted that it wasn't like NXT was just going up against AEW on Wednesdays. He said their television product was competing against non-wrestling shows as well. He explained:
"If you are creating a television product or content and that is the world we live in is content not television, not internet. It’s everything. You’re constantly competing for eyeballs and time against everything under the sun, including sleep and time to do other things, and video games, and Tik Tok and everything else that’s out there."
He then went on to talk about how it's awesome having a nice lead-in from Monday's Raw episode and that enough time has passed now that fans won't be confused with the fact SmackDown used to be on Tuesdays but now that can be known as NXT's night.
Triple H Says It's About The Talent
He mentioned that no matter who or what NXT goes up against, he's a big believer that the talent is what will eventually win the day. If they shine through and the product is good, they'll grow in popularity and get bigger and better opportunities to become big stars.
While thrilled with the fact NXT has their own night, he believes the opportunity is the same as it was before. "It’s about making stars and them having that opportunity not just the number every single week.”
In other words, Triple H wants us to believe they aren't looking at the ratings as opposed to AEW, but rather the build towards a consistent product that gets a nice lead in from their flagship show on Mondays.
