The WWE Power Couple That Ruled SmackDown

Quick Links

Throughout WWE history, there have been an array of notable couples who have enjoyed their time on television, whether they be kayfabe or legitimate partners. From Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth to The Miz and Maryse, there have been many successful couples. One of the most prominent and successful began in 2007 and stretched all the way to 2009, as they dominated SmackDown. Edge and Vickie Guerrero were the definition of a power couple, with Edge being the number one heel in WWE, and Guerrero being the General Manager of SmackDown. Their time together was hugely enjoyable and brought about a lot of brilliant moments.

Vickie Guerrero Became SmackDown General Manager And Helped Edge Become World Champion

Vickie Guerrero had become a recognisable name on WWE television, first appearing in the “Custody of Dominik” storyline alongside husband Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio. Following that, she remained on WWE television, mostly on the side of Chavo Guerrero. In 2007, Guerrero found herself assisting in duties on SmackDown, before rising to the role of General Manager following Teddy Long’s kayfabe heart attack.

When becoming General Manager, one of her first acts was ‘punishing’ Edge due to his interference in the Batista vs Undertaker World Title match at Survivor Series. However, this ‘punishment’ was awarding him the number one contendership, along with announcing that the pair had entered a romantic relationship with one another. The Undertaker would attack Vickie, putting her in a wheelchair, but this wouldn’t stop her from using her GM role to ensure that Edge was given shortcuts on his way to becoming the World Heavyweight Champion.

Despite An Affair, Edge And Vickie Guerrero Remained As WWE’s Power Couple

Whilst it was fairly evident that Edge was just using Vickie to fuel his own individual growth, they did a good job of convincing fans of their true love, with regular PDA, and with them constantly on screen together. They would form their own stable - La Familia, who would aid Edge during his reign as Champion, as he stood over SmackDown as the top heel. The Undertaker would be his top rival, with this feud being the top rivalry on the show.

Through matches full of shenanigans, Edge would pick up wins time and time again. However, things switched ahead of their wedding, as Edge firstly turned on Vickie after losing the World Title. This was a clear sign of how he was only with Vickie in order to keep him at the top. However, things soothed over, before footage emerged of Edge having an affair with wedding planner, Alicia Fox (although the pair had gotten married before this reveal). Vickie would book Edge in a Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker, writing him off TV for a while.

However, they rekindled their relationship during this hiatus, as Edge returned to win the WWE Championship with the help of Vickie at Survivor Series 2008. Their differences had been settled, likely due to the fact that they each offered a lot of positives to one another in terms of power and status. In many ways, they were absolutely perfect for each other, and despite this relationship being a clear strive for success from Edge, their chemistry and dynamic provided a lot of entertaining moments and matches over their two years together.

Edge Revealed He Had Been Using Vickie Guerrero The Entire Time

In 2009, Vickie was moved over to Raw, and although they were still married, they continued their own feuds and storylines, with Edge still in the World Title scene against the likes of Jeff Hardy, whilst Vickie feuded with Santino Marella over the Miss WrestleMania crown. Much of their separation was caused due to Vickie having an affair with The Big Show too, which put a lot of cracks into their relationship, with it only just hanging on with the loosest of strings.

Edge and Vickie Guerrero WWE Divorce

Mid-way through 2009, Vickie would announce that she was resigning from her role as the Raw General Manager, to which Edge came out to confront her. After apologizing half-heartedly, Edge then finally revealed that he had been using Vickie all along, with the relationship only centered around his attempts at winning the WWE and World Heavyweight Titles. Edge stated that he wanted a divorce, and the gigantic pop from the crowd tells you all you need to know about how important this relationship was considered by fans, and how big of a deal it was. Despite a messy ending to their relationship, and despite Edge only with her for glory, they were undoubtedly a power couple, and up there with the likes of Triple H and Stephanie McMahon in terms of how much rank they held over WWE, with it always seeming like Edge and Vickie would find a way to stay on top of SmackDown.
