The Sid Vs Goldberg Rivalry Was One Of WCW's Biggest Booking Disasters Ever

Quick Links

By 1999, WCW was in a rough place as their competitor, WWE, just kept on setting and breaking records, on the backs of stars such as the Rock, Triple H and Stone Cold. Meanwhile, WCW had an aging roster, wrestlers themselves as bookers, and a whole lot of unrest among the workers as the company was headed towards disaster.

The company had caught lightning in a bottle with Goldberg and the concept of an undefeated streak but as we all know, Goldberg lost to a taser at Starrcade 1998 and that was all she wrote.

Despite the ominous writing on the wall, WCW kept trying to regain a foothold in the industry, and fortunately (using that word somewhat loosely) for them, Sid Vicious made his return to WCW in the same year.

Sid Vicious Returned To WCW in 1999

Despite his shortcomings in the ring and on the microphone, Vicious was somehow a star and while nowhere near the likes of Steve Austin and Rock, Eudy was a small draw due to his physique, size, and the urban legends surrounding the man. Vicious was previously employed by the company but after the gory fight with Arn Anderson, he was released from the promotion and wrestled several years under the WWE banner and on the independent circuit.

Soon after his return to WCW, Vicious won the WCW United States title and then grew obsessed with Goldberg and his undefeated streak but he was over a year too late. Regardless, Vicious would squash jobbers and then he let everyone know that he was building an undefeated streak of his own.

Eventually, the antics of Sid Vicious drew the attention of Goldberg and these two behemoths started a feud. Both had limitations inside the ring but the sight of these two titans brawling it out was something to look forward to but then…

Sid Vicious Gets A Restraining Order... On The Man He Called Out Himself

Sid WCW

Sid Vicious actually got a restraining order against Goldberg. In kayfabe of course but this made no sense at all as Sid Vicious was the one who wanted Goldberg and once he got his attention, he filed for a restraining order. This was typical WCW overbooking but the feud continued and vehicles were involved.

Due to the restraining order in place, Goldberg was not able to physically touch his opponent but when it came to vehicles, it was no holds barred. On the September 27th edition of Nitro, Goldberg defeated Hugh Morris and called out Vicious and of course, the heel refused to show up and so Goldberg went looking for him.

After kicking the door to the locker room, Goldberg grabbed the car keys and then called a towing company. Why would Goldberg, a supernatural enigma, need to call a towing company to total the car? Sure, the vehicular slaughter trope had yet to catch up in pro wrestling but the fact that Goldberg needed help was just off-putting. Regardless, Vicious found his car wrecked to kingdom-come and the segment ended with him repeatedly yelling out the name of Goldberg. This was intended to generate heat for the feud but it was more comical than anything.

The next week, the saga of cars continued and Vicious arranged for Goldberg’s car to be compacted, just like Goldberg had done to him. Unfortunately, his own assistant backstabbed him and Vicious ended up parking his own car at the wrong spot. Upon finding out, Sid Vicious ran towards the parking area and saw his car folded into a pretzel. For the second week in a row, Vicious had to take a taxi home.

The Feud Was More Humorous Than Intense

Goldberg Vs Sid Vicious

Outdoing himself from the previous week, Vicious had a meltdown and instead of yelling the name of his foe, he screamed out “WHY ME!?” over and over again. The battle between two titans became a personal tale involving cars and towing companies and in the middle of his deeply personal feud, the undefeated streak was forgotten.

The next week, Goldberg defied the restraining order and speared his opponent and prior to the match at Halloween Havoc, he attacked Vicious backstage and busted him open. The match proceeded and while it was nothing special, it became a tad infamous as Vicious bled buckets throughout. Goldberg won the match and the United States title and while this was the perfect time to end the feud, it dragged on for a bit longer.

The Feud Ended In Typical WCW Fashion

Vicious accused Goldberg of saying I Quit during the match at Halloween Havoc and this led to them facing off against each other in an I Quit match at WCW Mayhem in November 1999. Strangely, the match ended with Goldberg choking Vicious out and the referee awarded the match to Bill, despite Vicious never saying the two words. Oh well, a typical, fitting end to a typical, overbooked WCW rivalry.

To put this into perspective, the highlight of this feud was Vicious yelling about vehicles. Yes, that sums it all up. So much for the battle of titans and so much for WCW putting their faith in Sid Vicious.
