The 10 Best Teams To Hold The Smackdown Tag Team Titles, Ranked

In 2016, WWE re-introduced its brand split, giving Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live distinct rosters. When that happened, the titles at the time went to Monday Night Raw and SmackDown received brand-new titles for its brand.

SmackDown has a great history with tag teams.  In the previous brand split, they had the superior tag team scene, and there were hopes that the new brand split could create a similar tag team boom for WWE. There have been 12 tag team champions since the brand relaunched, and here are the 10 best teams to hold the SmackDown tag team titles, ranked.

10 HEATH SLATER AND RHYNO

Heath Slater and RHyno

Heath Slater and Rhyno are not what someone thinks of when they name off great WWE tag teams. However, the duo was not only a fun tag team to follow, but they were also the first champions for the new brand. The team they beat in the tournament finals was The Usos.

The gimmick was fun. Heath Slater wanted to keep his job and needed to prove himself to do so. He did that by teaming with ECW legend Rhyno. The two men held the SmackDown tag team titles for 83 days.

9 DANIEL BRYAN AND ERICK ROWAN

In the middle of Daniel Bryan's heel turn, where he became the Planet's Champion, he lost his world title to Kofi Kingston and moved into the tag team scene. He won the SmackDown Tag Team Titles with Erick Rowan, who was his biggest supporter.

Rowan is on this list twice, and his tag team with Bryan was better than many expected. They started big, winning the titles from The Usos to fill the vacant title after the Hardy Boyz had to give them up. It was never as fun as Team Hell No from years past, but the two were a good combination of muscle and technical experience, and they held the titles for 68 days.

8 AMERICAN ALPHA

In NXT, American Alpha was a hugely successful tag team. This mostly was because NXT allowed them to move up slowly, let fans to get behind them, and then prove that they were this era's answer to the best babyface tag teams from the past like the Rock N' Roll Express.

They even had the perfect rivals in The Revival, the two teams bringing out the best in each other. However, SmackDown fans didn't know who they were, never got behind them after a big push the minute they arrived, and their only title reign lasted for 83 days before WWE broke them up.

7 MIZ AND JOHN MORRISON

Miz and John Morrison are a fascinating case. John Morrison was in one of the best tag teams in WWE this century as part of MNM. After that team broke up, Morrison teamed with The Miz, and the two men ended up very successful, winning tag team titles and were one of the first social media success stories for WWE as well.

John Morrison returned to WWE this year, immediately turned heel, and reteamed with The Miz. They are the current SmackDown Tag Team Champions, and while they have only held the titles since February, their past success proves they are still one of the best in the business.

6 THE HARDY BOYZ

The Hardy Boyz are one of the most successful tag teams in WWE history. They could be higher on this list, but there is one thing holding them back. They only held the titles for 20 days.

However, that doesn't hurt their standing when it comes to how great of a tag team they are. The two had to relinquish the titles when Jeff Hardy had to leave for surgery. It was a disappointing way to end the brothers' ninth tag team title reign, likely their last title run in WWE.

5 THE REVIVAL

When it comes to WWE, one of the best tag teams in the company is the one that it didn't seem to want to push. The Revival came up from NXT as a team that had five-star matches with several different tag teams and was old-school in all the best ways.

However, WWE kept pushing them back down, although they are the only team ever to hold the Raw, SmackDown, and NXT titles. On SmackDown, they only had one title reign, beating the New Day and then losing them back only 54 days later.

4 THE BLUDGEON BROTHERS

When Luke Harper and Erick Rowan were together as part of the Wyatt Family, they were nearly unstoppable. However, when they left Wyatt and reformed as the tag team known as The Bludgeon Brothers, they were pretty much unbeatable.

The team won the SmackDown Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania 34 when they beat The Usos and The New Day in a three-way championship match. For the next 135 days, they dominated every tag team on SmackDown, and it was only a Luke Harper injury that derailed their run.

3 THE BAR

Sheamus and Cesaro had a long feud against each other and even had to fight in a series of matches that took place on Monday Night Raw over a couple of months. By the end of their feud, there was new respect there between the two men, and they formed a tag team.

The two were massively successful as a duo, winning five tag team titles together. However, only one of those titles came on SmackDown. The Bar beat The New Day for the titles and held them for 102 days before losing to Miz and Shane McMahon.

2 THE NEW DAY

The New Day holds a record on SmackDown. They have held the SmackDown Tag Team Titles more times than any other tag team in history. Their five tag team title reigns on SmacDown is one more than The Usos, their most recent reign ending in 2020.

The New Day has won the titles by beating The Usos twice, the Bludgeon Brothers once, and The Revival twice. Of course, that also means they lost the titles five times, but they are one of the best tag teams in WWE this decade.

1 THE USOS

The New Day is the best tag team in Monday Night Raw this era, but it is The Usos who are the best tag team ever to hold the SmackDown titles. They have one less title reign than The New Day, with only four runs with the belts, but they kept the titles for 379 days, 100 more than The New Day on one less title reign.

The Usos won their first titles from American Alpha and held them for 123 days. They traded them back and forth with New Day in 2017, adding 205 more days to their record. Finally, they won the titles a fourth time in 2019 and held them for 51 days before losing to the Hardy Boyz.
