WWE superstar Sable's marriage to Marc Mero had its fair share of outside interferences, and after ten years, the couple couldn't kick out under the weight of all their relationship woes. Wrestling fans know too well how it all ended, with Sable cheating on Marc Mero and marrying Brock Lesnar, but that is not the entire story. The problems likely began much earlier. So, why did Sable and Marc Mero have such a rocky relationship and marriage in the first place?
Sable's Rise To The Top Eclipsed Marc Mero's WWE Career
Sable quickly gained popularity in WWE in 1997 while Mero was out with a knee injury, and her sudden surge in popularity led her to heights Mero could only dream of in his career. Because of this, Mero and Sable were eventually booked into a feud with each other on-screen, with Mero taking on the role of a jealous heel husband. This feud culminated in Mero taking a Sable Bomb and selling it for his wife, putting her over in the eyes of the fans and splitting the couple up on-screen. While it may have done wonders for Sable and created a perfect moment for audiences, it is because of this angle that Steve Austin would famously refuse to work a program with Mero. Austin thought Sable had buried Mero.
After being rejected by the company's top performer, Mero's career with WWE never recovered. Thus, it became a stress point between the two, as Sable's success directly influenced Mero's downfall. However, it was through no fault of her own.

Marc Mero Did Not Like Sable Posing In Playboy
In 1999, Sable was offered the opportunity to be on the cover of Playboy Magazine. Admittedly, Mero was unhappy about the idea of his wife posing for the racy publication. Mero recalls in an interview that he rejected the idea when Vince McMahon mentioned it. Marc thought he shouldn't allow her to appear in Playboy because of his Christian faith. However, during discussions about the idea with her privately, they decided that God would probably forgive them if she did pose, so she did. It became one of the best-selling issues in the history of Playboy, and Sable would go on to appear multiple times. Still, according to Mero, it caused cracks in the foundation of their marriage, and all of their problems were the consequences of the sin they had committed.

When Sable left the WWE in 1999, she also filed a $110 million lawsuit against the company, levying allegations of sexual harassment, unsafe working conditions, and steroid abuse. Sable's severe claims included allegations that male wrestlers watched female wrestlers undress through peepholes and that she was encouraged to expose her breasts on TV. The case was eventually settled, and Sable was happy with the outcome. However, Mero recounts this time as stressful on the couple's relationship, noting the infamous story of X-Pac defecating in Sable's bags after a European tour. Mero claims that the couple was vilified behind the scenes leading up to their departure, which led to this incident.
With their relationship strained but still intact, Mero and Sable managed to weather the storm and made it out of WWE. The couple uprooted and moved into a small apartment in Studio City so that Sable could pursue her career in Hollywood.

Marc Mero Did Not Want Sable To Go Back To WWE
In 2003, Sable decided to return to the WWE. Before going back, she ran the idea by Mero, who tried to convince her that the other talent would not receive her well and that Vince McMahon would never have her back after the lawsuit. However, Vince was interested in bringing Sable back, and she had already contacted him. So back to the WWE she went. Unfortunately, this decision would see Sable spend more time on the road away from the family, frustrating Mero as she got harder and harder to reach.
Her second run in WWE pushed her close to another man, and eventually, she left Mero for Brock Lesnar, ending their ten-year marriage.

Both Sable And Marc Mero Seem Much Happier Since Their Marriage Ended
Right or wrong, Mero didn't agree with some of the decisions Sable made in her rise to stardom. This is the main contributor to the rockiness of their relationship and marriage. Perhaps they would still be together if Marc Mero had supported Sable and not let so much get under his skin.
Today, Sable is happily married to Brock Lesnar, and Marc is thankful that he and Sable split up because it has allowed him to be a motivational speaker. A tumultuous relationship that crashed and burned turned into a happy ending.
