The article contains spoilers for Outer Banks season 3. A major Outer Banksactor is speaking out about his character's death and why it changes the show completely. As the Kooks and Pogues continue their quest to find the hidden treasure, season 3 sees them attempting to find the legendary El Dorado. After Ward Cameron is killed at the end of Outer Banks season 3, the entire show appears to have reached its critical point. Ward's Outer Banks death leaves Rafe and Sarah on their own as they are forced to suffer the aftermath of their father's demise.

Now, actor Charles Esten is addressing Ward's death in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He shares the creative initiative in developing his character's death and reflects on his character's relationship with his children. Check out his quote below:

"It’s hard for me to know the time because we overlapped episodes so much. But the scene itself came very, very late in the game. There were different outcomes of that scene. To my mind, we landed on the one that is by far the most meaningful and the most interesting. Sometimes things just work out, and a lot of it is the writers being utterly available to what’s gonna work in that moment and what’s gonna really make the audience feel something.

There’s a spot early on — in fact, in one of the ads — where Ward is with Sarah. It’s the first time they’ve seen each other since they were on the boat and the terrible fight at the end of that scene. Sarah is telling Ward how much he’s hurt her, and he’s saying how sorry he is. Later, she says, 'Remember when you told me you would do anything for me?'And Ward looks at her, and he says, 'Anything.' It was just true in the moment. If he was being authentic — and that was always the question — well, he ends up proving it, which is really special and sweet to me because I love the human beings, man. They’re fascinating and interesting and maddening and glorious, in all these different ways. So you don’t want to play anybody that’s less than that. You want to play somebody that has all these facets."

How Outer Banks' Ward Redeemed Himself

Ward in a cabin in Outer Banks

Ward is hardly a heroic character throughout Outer Banks' first two seasons. As a member of the Kooks, he is the epitome of the wealthy patriarch with no interest in seeing actual justice come about for the actions of himself or his family. Having framed John B. in Outer Banks season 1 for the death of Sherrif Peterkin to protect Rafe, he never particularly cared for honesty or integrity.

In fact, Ward has even shown that he cares little for the life of his own child. After all, he nearly kills Sarah to keep her from defecting to John B.'s side and abandoning the family. It can hardly be described as the actions of a good and just person. Nevertheless, season 3 somehow sees him redeem himself.

After Ryan tries to kill Sarah in season 3, Ward jumps to his daughter's defense. Tragically, while working to get Ryan away from her, Ward throws them both off a cliff and falls to his death. Despite the fact that Ward has died in every Outer Banks season, the circumstances mean that this will likely be his last death. This event is tragic, given that he dies protecting his daughter in a massively redemptive act. Unfortunately, left with nothing but a quest for vengeance, it could eventually lead to Rafe replacing his father by becoming Outer Banks' new villain.
