No Time To Die BTS Emphasizes Its Ana De Armas' Paloma Mistake
A behind-the-scenes video, shared by Ana De Armas, shows her training for No Time To Die, and illustrates a mistake that many viewers noticed.
When No Time To Die was released it became another successful installment in the James Bond franchise, but some critics say the movie missed a trick with regards to Ana De Armas’ role. After the movie was delayed multiple times throughout 2020 and 2021, audiences were eager to see what was next for Bond. Although many of the characters were familiar, there was one new actor, Ana De Armas, who made a lasting impression.
The long-awaited No Time To Die saw Bond return to face another enemy, Lyutsifer Safin, in possession of a government-developed bio-weapon. Bond’s mission takes him to Cuba where he is aided by another agent going by the name of Paloma. Paloma, played by Ana De Armas, is a CIA operative who claims she is on her first job out of training. Together they infiltrate a SPECTRE gathering before the meeting takes a turn for the worst and they have to fight their way out. Ana De Armas has been praised for her part in the movie, and critics have questioned why she did not feature for longer, hailing it as a mistake.
Not only did De Armas put in an incredible performance, but her recent post on Instagram displays how hard she worked to perfect the physical side of the role. The video, which shows De Armas training to perform her own stunts, illustrates the commitment she had to the character and it paid off in the final cut. The scene she is seen practicing involved Paloma disarming multiple henchmen, and displayed the skills De Armas had honed prior to filming. She stated (Via Fab TV) that she had “the best stunt team” who, through their training, gave her the confidence to believe she could execute the scene to the highest standard. This behind-the-scenes glimpse highlights how, had De Armas had a greater role, the movie as a whole may have been even more successful thanks to her unbridled focus and dedication to the character.
Critics argue that because of her performance and dedication to the role, De Armas should have been given more screen time. They suggest that her character could have been utilized better and that No Time To Die would have benefitted from including her in more of the story. Although she only had around 10 minutes of screen time, Ana De Armas’ character was a big hit with viewers, so much so that many now call for Paloma to have her own spin-off show. De Armas blended Paloma’s dedication to the job, her nervousness, and her upbeat personality to create a very likable character. In an interview with Fab TV, the actress explained that she wanted viewers to see Paloma as “relatable and normal” and leaned into the playful aspect of the character. Both critics and audiences alike enjoyed the fresh take on a Bond girl and De Armas balanced the nuances of the role perfectly.
It was surprising not to see De Armas on screen for longer, especially given the length of the movie, and many have criticized this as a mistake. However, due to No Time To Die being Daniel Craig’s last movie as Bond, there were more loose ends to tie up than usual, and it seems the length of De Armas’ screen time was an unfortunate result of this. With audiences so enamored with De Armas’ performance though, it wouldn’t be a surprise if her character returns for future Bond movies.
