Maya Rudolph Explains Why She Says Bubble Bath Like That On Big Mouth

Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on Big Mouth, says her pronunciation of "bubble bath" grew out of the character.

Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on Big Mouth, says her pronunciation of "bubble bath" grew out of the character's personality. Netflix's hit adult animated show, which follows a group of teens battling with puberty, was created by Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg. The show's human characters are based on Kroll and Goldberg as 7th graders, with much of the inspiration for the show's storylines being taken from their own real-life struggles with puberty. The show has broadcast three seasons on Netflix, with season 4 expected to be released in fall 2020.

Along with the core cast of teenage human characters, Nick (Kroll), Andrew (John Mulaney), Jessi (Jessi Klein), Jay (Jason Mantzoukas), and Missy (previously Jenny Slate), there are three Hormone Monsters that form part of the main cast. Rudolph voices Connie, Kroll voices Maury and Thandie Newton voices Mona. The Hormone Monsters are physical manifestations of the character's uncontrollable hormones, encouraging them to submit to their desires as well as helping them navigate the ups and downs of puberty. Rudolph's Connie is particularly memorable, not only because of the outrageous things partly because of the unique voice performance she gives, including a strange reading of the line "bubble bath."

Rudolph revealed what inspired the strange pronunciation of that line. Speaking on Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, the podcast by the late-night talk-show host, Rudolph says it was born out of the character's nature. Rudolph was responding to a comment from O'Brien, explaining that he became obsessed with the way she pronounces "bubble bath." Rudolph says because Connie is a Hormone Monstress, she and the show's creators wanted to get across the fact that she's always up and down, making it clear she is a "roller-coaster of emotions." You can read her full comments on it below.

I remember doing it and I remember sort of being egged on to… can you find more? Can you actually find more? And we were trying to make — I think maybe initially because she’s meant to be a hormone monstress we were trying to make her voice a roller-coaster. Just like a roller-coaster of emotions. So it was sort of that low, high, low dipping stuff.

The former SNL star added she doesn't remember the exact moment she decided to pronounce "bubble bath" so strangely, but that it stuck once she did it. O'Brien revealed that he's so enamored of the way Rudolph says it that he wants her to record the phrase as his outgoing voice message. The comedian is clearly a fan of Big Mouth.

Rudolph's reasoning makes a lot of sense, considering Connie is a wild, impulsive creature, who throughout the three seasons of the show, is all over the place emotionally. So it's true to the character that she would impulsively choose not only to be obsessed with bubble baths as a way to calm down but also to say the phrase so strangely and sensually. Of course, that's not the only feature of Rudolph's performance in Big Mouth, but it is one of the more interesting character traits.
