Jon Jones Puts Tom Aspinall On Blast For Call To Strip Him Of Title

Highlights

  • Jon Jones defends his title against Tom Aspinall's request to be stripped, citing his long-standing career and major injury requiring surgery.
  • Jones questions Aspinall's credibility and implies he may be another overhyped fighter.
  • Despite Aspinall's suggestion, Dana White confirms Jones will still face Stipe Miocic next year, leaving uncertainty for Aspinall's next move.

UFC Heavyweight champion Jon Jones has addressed the recent request from new interim champion Tom Aspinall to have him stripped of his title. Originally slated to face Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 295, Jones had to withdraw from the card due to a torn pectoral muscle that required surgery.

In his absence, the UFC proceeded with an interim title bout between Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich. Aspinall secured the championship by knocking out Pavlovich in the co-main event. Post-fight, Aspinall urged Jones to relinquish the title he had won in March against Ciryl Gane, citing that it's a common practice for fighters to vacate their titles when faced with such injuries.

The UFC Legend Defended His Record

'Bones' Jones took to Twitter to question Aspinall's credentials and defend his legacy.

“I’ve faced the absolute toughest competition this world had to offer for 15 years now,” Jones wrote on Twitter, continuing: “During camp for a title defense, I sustained a major injury that required surgery for the first time in my career. Now, I have newcomers requesting I get my championship stripped. “Zero wins over legends, zero title defenses, and already thinking you can call the shots to Dana, that’s hilarious.”

Jones then implies that the British interim champion may be another hype job, concluding the Twitter statement with the following: “In my 15 year career I have seen so many guys who are supposed to be the next big thing. There’s ever only been one Jon Jones, never forget that. 🤫.”

Aspinall responded with a sarcastic apology. During the post-fight press conference in UFC Austin, CEO Dana White dismissed Aspinall's suggestion, affirming that the arrangements for Jon Jones to square off against Stipe Miocic next year remain unchanged.

What Is Next For Tom Aspinall?

The Interim Champion Has A Long Wait Before Jones Returns

The current situation leaves uncertainty regarding whether Aspinall will opt to defend his recently acquired title or choose to wait for the unification bout against the winner of the Jones vs. Miocic matchup. Aspinall has demonstrated remarkable prowess since entering the UFC, compiling an impressive 7-1 overall record, securing all seven victories through knockout or submission.

Notable triumphs include wins over Alexander Volkov, Serghei Spivac, and Andrei Arlovski. His lone defeat occurred via TKO against Curtis Blaydes, attributed to a knee injury that kept him out of the octagon for a year. Aspinall has a long way to go to match up to Jones, who has effectively maintained an undefeated status throughout his entire career.
