Chad Gable Challenged Gunther For The WWE Intercontinental Championship Last Year And Failed

Chad Gable's Intercontinental Title Match With Gunther Ended In Heartbreak

Dating back to September 2023, Chad Gable had been on Gunther's radar and was a credible threat to his dominant championship reign. Currently, Gunther is at 640+ days as champion, way more than the previous record held by The Honky Tonk Man, as his reign stood at 454 days before dropping the title to The Ultimate Warrior at SummerSlam 1988.

The title match between Gunther and Gable was hard-hitting, competitive, and above all else, a masterpiece. The WWE Universe was solidly behind Gable, wanting to see him win the Intercontinental title, but no one more so than his family ringside, especially his daughters. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be. Gable fought with his heart on his sleeve and gave Gunther a run for his money, but it was Gunther that walked away victorious and solidified himself as the longest reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion in company history. This left wrestling fans disappointed, as Gable's daughter watched at ringside in tears, seeing that her daddy failed to beat Gunther. Ironically, after months of letting this loss soak in, Gable used this loss and humiliation as a new-found motivation.

Chad Gable Comments On Recent Training, Exercising His Demons

The loss against Gunther in September 2023 was a bitter pill for Chad Gable to swallow. If anything, the loss lit a fire under Gable as the image of his daughter crying at ringside burnt into his mind as a daddy-daughter moment that he wished never had to happen. With that said, Gable began his training as he prepared for tonight's Gauntlet match on Raw. Gable shared his training montage on X/Twitter, as he wanted to express how much this match meant to him.

“I’ve been running the gauntlet in my own head since that match with Gunther last September. Trust me, the only tears you wanna wipe off your child’s face are tears of joy, but if I want that chance, a new gauntlet stands in front of me.“

The upcoming match is filled with demons from his past and have given him the opportunity to extinguish those demons as part of his redemption plan.

“It’s a rare chance to rewrite history, we don’t get those every day so I intend to claim it and become a beacon of perseverance that my fans and my family can be proud of so I will endure, because for Chad Gable, this match just means more.”

Chad's full training montage can be viewed below:

The participants for the Gauntlet match include: Gable, Sami Zayn, Ricochet, JD McDonagh, Bronson Reed, and Shinsuke Nakamura, with the odds on favorites being Gable or Zayn walking away as the new #1 contender.
