Hulk Hogan & 8 Other Wrestlers Who Were Guilty Of Not Selling

One critical aspect of wrestling is "selling," which means making the moves and attacks of the opponent look convincing and impactful. Not all wrestlers have mastered this skill, and some have been guilty of not selling during their matches. These performers, including the legendary Hulk Hogan, have faced criticism and backlash from fans and colleagues for their lack of commitment to the art of selling.

There are some cases like The Undertaker and The Fiend, who "no sold" for the sake of improving their character. In other cases, wrestlers no sold on their own accord. This list will examine Hulk Hogan and 8 others who were guilty of the latter.

9 Hulk Hogan

While other legends like The Rock, John Cena, and Steve Austin gained significant fame, Hogan remains a prominent figure in the industry. Hulk Hogan is the most famous professional wrestler globally. He popularized the sport initially despite his egotistical reputation. His legend for yielding his power is almost as big as his wrestling legend. Hogan has been accused of no selling in many different instances.

During a tag team match in 1995, Hulk Hogan no-sold Brutus Beefcake's finisher and destroyed the credibility of Randy Savage by no selling his Elbow Drop in the same match. When Big Van Vader attacked and hit him with his finisher, Hogan again no-sold it. He destroyed the credibility of three big WCW stars and was, reportedly, responsible for the decisions to do so. He was also accused of no selling a Tombstone Piledriver from The Undertaker and Arn Anderson's Spine Buster

8 Goldberg

Goldberg's WWE career had its ups and downs, leaving fans with mixed feelings about the WCW legend. Despite being one of the biggest names in wrestling, he found himself in some strange and overlooked moments throughout his stints with the company. Goldberg was unhappy with some of these experiences, particularly during his first run in the 2000s.

In WCW, Goldberg was booked extremely strong. He was never regarded as one of the best workers but usually sold decently well when it mattered. He famously no sold a Spear from Sting that was likely kayfabe. He clearly no sold punches from Raven in a match on WCW Nitro that was unnecessary and made Raven look weak.

7 Bruiser Brody

Bruiser Brody

Bruiser Brody, the 6'8" mountainous legend of wrestling in the 80s, was known for his ferocious entry into the ring wielding a chain and wearing fur-covered boots. His fame spread worldwide, particularly in Japan where he was considered one of the strongest wrestlers. There was one major moment where Brody was clearly guilty of not selling for Lex Luger.

A 1987 cage match between Lex Luger and Bruiser Brody is infamous in wrestling history for its bizarre outcome. Luger was a rising star, while Brody was a renowned renegade with a reputation for doing as he pleased. Before the match, Luger attempted to discuss it with Brody, but the veteran wrestler felt disrespected. During the match, Brody refused to sell Luger's offense and just stood in the ring. Luger eventually climbed out of the cage and left. The aftermath remains a topic of debate.

6 Ultimate Warrior

The Ultimate Warrior was a popular, charismatic professional wrestler whose rise to fame in the WWE included a WrestleMania main event victory over Hulk Hogan. However, Warrior struggled to handle his sudden celebrity status and his career was marked by starts and stops, including a brief stint in WCW. Despite his polarizing legacy, fans continue to be captivated by the enigmatic superstar.

Warrior famously didn't sell a Pedigree delivered by Triple H at Wrestlemania 12. Although that "no sell" was kayfabe, Warrior was accused of no selling in the WWE at different times. Randy Savage often struggled to put Warrior away when he no sold Elbow Drops that were usually as deadly as a Triple H Pedigree.

5 Hawk

Road Warrior Hawk

The Road Warriors, or Legion of Doom, are an immensely successful tag team in pro wrestling history, winning 13 championships and earning global recognition for their unique fighting style and iconic appearance. Despite achieving most of their early triumphs in the AWA, NWA, and Japan, they also clinched two WWE World Tag Team Championships during their multiple WWE stints.

Their final WWE tenure in 1998-99 was marred by tension between Animal and Hawk, which led to a failed storyline and marked the end of their WWE career. Hawk clearly no sold moves from Kane and Rob Van Dam in 2003. The Road Warriors, in general, were both known to make big bumps look weak to appear more dominant as a force.

4 Alberto Del Rio

Alberto Del Rio

Alberto Del Rio, also known as Alberto El Patron, boasts an impressive professional wrestling career with multiple championship wins worldwide. Despite winning several titles in WWE, including world titles, the United States Championship, and Money in the Bank, he failed to connect with the audience.

He comes from a lineage of famous wrestlers, including his father Dos Caras, and uncle Mil Mascaras, but his accomplishments are overshadowed by his controversial behavior outside of the ring. During his last days in the WWE, De Rio was clearly phoning it in and often times no sold every move until the finish of many matches.

3 Sid

Sid WWE

Throughout his career, Sid's association with WCW was a stop-start, but it was the first and last major promotion to showcase his charismatic presence and power moves in North America. Despite outside incidents, his success in holding World Championships in both WCW and WWE during the 1990s is a testament to his personality, intensity, and raw promo skills, which are sorely missed in today's product.

In a classic case of WCW overbooking, Sid Vicious filed a restraining order against Goldberg and their feud continued with car-related stunts. The feud became more comical than intense, with Vicious yelling about his wrecked car and Goldberg needing to call a towing company. Sid severely no sold a body slam during one of their segments that really made Goldberg and wrestling look soft.

2 Diesel

Diesel Returns At 2011 Royal Rumble

Diesel's exceptional performance in the 1994 and 1996 Royal Rumble matches established him as one of the greatest wrestlers to never win the Rumble. In 1994, he asserted his dominance by eliminating seven wrestlers, utilizing his size and strength. This set the tone for a successful year where he would go on to become the WWE Champion, only being stopped by a group effort from Bam Bam Bigelow, Crush, Mabel, "Sparky" Plugg, and Shawn Michaels. Diesel made a return during the 2011 Royal Rumble and, during the match, Diesel no sold a 619 from Rey Mysterio.

1 Jim Duggan

At Fall Brawl 1999, Berlyn, a new German wrestler, made his debut with a nameless bodyguard and interpreter Uma Ludendorff. He spoke only German and promised to destroy American wrestlers, starting with Buff Bagwell. Berlyn battled Hacksaw Jim Duggan but faced challenges as Duggan didn't cooperate and didn't sell Berlyn's moves. Berlyn eventually won by exposing the concrete and clotheslining Duggan. There were rumors that Duggan was told not to sell, but Berlyn denied it.
