Edge is one of the most prolific wrestlers in WWE history, with a nearly unmatched accolade list that has seen multiple World Title victories, and many more accomplishments over the years too. He is also someone who has made some special moments, such as the first ever Money in the Bank cash-in and a memorable return from retirement at the 2020 Royal Rumble event. On top of that, he also holds a special distinction when it comes to the Elimination Chamber match. Back in 2009, Edge became the first and only wrestler to ever compete in two Elimination Chambers in one night, and some fans may wonder as to how that exactly happened.
Edge Defended The WWE Championship Inside The Opening Elimination Chamber Match
At the 2009 No Way Out event, the PPV which hosted the Elimination Chamber matches before its own namesake PPV came into existence, Edge walked in as the WWE Champion. He was the number one heel on SmackDown, and defended his gold against a field of Jeff Hardy, Triple H, The Undertaker, Big Show, and Vladimir Kozlov. Edge, like every champion inside a chamber, had a severe disadvantage, and even more so when he was one of the first two competitors entered into the match. Often, the champions enter the match later, but Edge didn’t have the luck of the draw on his side on this night.

Edge and his main rival at the time, Jeff Hardy, went toe-to-toe, adding another chapter to their storied rivalry. After Edge had stolen the WWE Title a month prior, Hardy managed to issue some revenge. Within the first few minutes of the match, Hardy reversed a spear into an inside cradle and pinned Edge, eliminating him from the bout to a huge shock and surprise. Never in Elimination Chamber history had someone been eliminated so quickly, let alone the champion. This threw the match into a huge state of unpredictability, with it guaranteed almost immediately that fans were set to see a new WWE Champion. This started the match in an electric way as a gobsmacked Edge walked to the back. This wouldn’t be the end of his night though.
Edge Broke His Way Into A Second Elimination Chamber Match
In the main event, John Cena was set to defend his World Heavyweight Championship against the top stars on Raw, battling the likes of Chris Jericho, Rey Mysterio, Kane, Mike Knox, and Kofi Kingston. The wrestlers began making their entrances, each going into their respective pods. However, the entire PPV was turned on its head during Kingston’s entrance. He made his way down to the ramp, but before he could make it into the ring, he was ambushed from behind by an enraged Edge.

Edge began to unleash a vicious beatdown on Kingston, and forced his way into the ring, locking himself in a chamber pod and entering himself into the match. The confusion from commentators added to the bizarre and thrilling angle, as it wasn’t clear if he was allowed to be in the match or not. Either way, he was in the ring, inside a pod, and the bell was eventually rung after Kingston was helped to the back and everyone else had made their way into the match.
Edge Walked Out As World Heavyweight Champion
Edge was the fifth person to enter the match, and he was instantly met with an angry Rey Mysterio, who was still furious at Edge’s attack on Kingston. However, Edge managed to make his way through the match, even eliminating the champion John Cena in a huge moment. In the end, it was Edge and Mysterio as the last two, and after a fun back and forth, Edge shocked the world by winning the entire contest, becoming the World Heavyweight Champion. He once again lived up to his name as the Ultimate Opportunist, and pulled off an incredible feat of holding both the World Heavyweight Championship and WWE Championship in one single night, though not at the same time. It was later revealed that General Manager and wife of Edge, Vickie Guerrero, had okayed his inclusion if he managed to fill an available spot.

Although Edge didn’t spend too long in his first chamber match of the night, it was still a stunning scenario to see him compete in two different ones in just one night - something no one else has managed to do since. Edge’s win of the World Heavyweight Title, despite being a SmackDown superstar, plunged the Road to WrestleMania into complete disarray, adding huge excitement and an unpredictable nature. The Elimination Chamber has lost some steam in recent years, but it is because huge moments like this don’t happen often anymore. Edge once again made history, becoming synonymous with yet another match type, adding to his legacy as the one of the greatest ever.
