How Does WWE Feel About Adam "Edge" Copeland Going To AEW?

Highlights

  • Adam "Edge" Copeland arrived in AEW, leaving WWE due to growing apart, and had a confrontation with Christian Cage.
  • WWE has no hard feelings about losing Edge, as they let his trademark lapse and expected him to leave.
  • Tony Khan said Edge will be a full-time performer in AEW, where aging wrestlers have found success, and his presence will have a big impact.

At AEW WrestleDream last night, wrestling history was made, as the hoped for became reality: Adam "Edge" Copeland arrived in AEW, showing up at the end of the night for a confrontation with his long time partner, Christian Cage. After the show, the former Edge spoke at the media scrum about why he left WWE, citing that he and the company had grown apart, as he wanted to do more.

So how does WWE feel about losing one of its biggest stars? According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, there are no hard feelings. While WWE owns the Edge name, they did let the "Rated R Superstar" trademark lapse, hence why AEW used it so much. Sapp's report said that WWE expected Copeland to be leaving the promotion. “Talent in AEW and WWE both spoke about Adam Copeland jumping ship as if it was going to happen as far back as mid-August. Sources that had worked with Copeland spoke as if it was a fact even before his last WWE match, though many were not told in an official capacity until well after that.”

WWE was quoted as being "happy for him," noting that Copeland and WWE left on good terms, and that they'd be happy to have him back one day.

How Will Adam Copeland Be Different In AEW From WWE?

During the post WrestleDream media scrum, Tony Khan talked about Adam Copeland's role in AEW. He said that Copeland would be a full-time performer appearing every week. He even has his first match in AEW on next week's Dynamite against Christian Cage's cohort, Luchasaurus.

In WWE, Edge was a part-time performer. While he was great when he did show up, he often had months long hiatuses that made it feel like his career was winding down. At nearing the age of 50, Copeland can't keep going forever. He even said in his WWE goodbye at SmackDown in Toronto that he didn't know if he could keep wrestling for another year. Still, AEW has been known for getting the best out of its aging performers, giving them a second life. For proof of that, look no further than the TNT Champion. Christian Cage is doing some of the best work of his career with his hilarious dead father gimmick. At almost 60, Billy Gunn is part of the AEW Trios Champions with The Acclaimed. And then there's Sting, who's diving off of ladders and through tables at 64.

How long Adam Copeland can continue to wrestle remains to be seen. In the immediate future, however, his presence will have a huge impact on AEW. They desperately needed something to move past the drama of CM Punk and losing Jade Cargill to WWE. They also needed to find a new draw who could boost bad ticket sales and pump up TV ratings. Adam "Edge" Copeland is the answer. In just his five minutes on TV at WrestleDream, Copeland looked like a wrestler rejuvenated. His next and perhaps final chapter is going to be fun to watch.
