Gabrielle Union Gives Update On Possible Bring It On 2 With Original Cast
Gabrielle Union, who starred alongside Kirsten Dunst in Bring It On, gives an update about the status of a sequel featuring the original cast.
Gabrielle Union has given an update on a potential Bring It On sequel movie. Although Bring It On hit theatres over 20 years ago, it has remained a cult classic since its initial release in 2000. The teen comedy follows the rivalry between high school cheerleading captain Torrance Shipman’s (Kirsten Dunst) squad the Toros, and their competition, the East Compton Clovers, led by Union’s character Isis. After finding out the Toros’ routines were stolen from the Clovers, Torrance is determined to beat them fairly when they face off at Nationals.
Bring It On generated five direct-to-video movie sequels without the film’s original stars, a Broadway musical written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and an upcoming Bring It On slasher movie spinoff at SyFy. Dedicated fans of the franchise have been calling for a faithfully cast follow-up featuring the original characters for years. In an interview in 2020, Union teased the possibility, saying that a Bring It On sequel was “absolutely going to happen.” Original Bring It On Director Peyton Reed and screenwriter Jessica Bendinger have also hinted that they’d like to make more Bring It On titles that would expand the film’s universe.
Union told ComicBook.com that she and the rest of the cast still have "interest" in revisiting Bring It On, confirming that serious conversations about updating the cheerleader flick happened during panels for the film’s 20th anniversary. Despite their apparent collective eagerness to return to their roles, Union did joke about the busy schedule of her former co-star Kirsten Dunst preventing that reunion from happening any time soon. Union referred to Dunst’s Academy Award nomination for her role in The Power of the Dog but still did not completely rule out the possibility of a Bring It On sequel:
""We all have an interest in revisiting it ... But now that Kirsten is up for an Oscar, I don't know. That twofer with her and the husband they may want to keep that train on the tracks, so I don't know if she wants to change gears that dramatically and come back to be Torrance again, but maybe. I don't know. Maybe she wants some dance moves after being out where they filmed [The Power of the Dog] but maybe she'll want some more dance and hip-hop in her life."
Union didn’t provide any further details about when a Bring It On sequel could happen, and it’s still unclear if the film will ever officially move forward in the development process. However, based on the repeated interest from the film’s cast, it seems like there’s still hope that another Bring It On may be in the works in the future. The potential to revisit Dunst and Union's Torrence and Isis, and see how their lives have unfolded over the past two decades, creates an opportunity to expand on the beloved and iconic characters' story in a new way.
Sequels and reboots of beloved films and television shows have been dominating entertainment over the past few years (Union herself stars in this year's Cheaper By The Dozen reboot). It certainly wouldn’t be difficult to reintroduce a well-loved comedy like Bring It On to a new generation of fans, since its legacy still holds up today. Although it seems like Dunst’s most recent success might stall an upcoming sequel project from happening any time soon, Union’s assurance that she and the rest of the Bring It On original cast are on board is promising. Ultimately, seeing where the cheerleading legacies of Torrance and Isis took them as adults seems like too good of an opportunity to pass up.
