Every Royal Rumble Performance From Triple H, Ranked
Paul Levesque made his WWE debut in 1995 as Hunter Hearst Helmsley, a modified version of his WCW character Jean-Paul Levesque. In the two and a half decades since, the superstar who would come to be known as Triple H has gone from lowly newcomer to one of the most powerful people behind the scenes in WWE.

Over this span of time, Triple H has competed in nine Royal Rumble events. While the number of participations is nowhere near record-setting, The Game has seen monumental success from this event, tallying three final four placements and two victories. While they weren’t all mind-blowing performances, here are all of Triple H’s Royal Rumble performances ranked. Please note, the focus is on the Royal Rumble match and not the PPV, so singles matches will be ignored.
9 1997
Every list has to start somewhere, and this one begins with Triple H’s second Royal Rumble appearance. While this was one of the best Royal Rumble events in history, it didn't quite land in The Game's favor.
Helmsley entered the match 12th looking strong, if a bit slow. He soon fell into the background, mostly taking bumps until his early elimination at the hands of Goldust. Over nearly seven minutes in the ring, The Game failed to log an elimination or make any real impact on the match.
In fairness, Helmsley’s performance in this event can be forgiven considering it was his second match of the night. Kicking the event off, Triple H successfully defended his Intercontinental Championship in a singles match following several interferences from Mr. Hughes.
8 1996
Hunter Hearst Helmsley’s inaugural Royal Rumble appearance was slightly more effective than the one which followed despite also being his second performance of the night that year. During the pre-show for the event, Helmsley competed in a match with Duke Droese to determine the first and 30th entrants into the Rumble. While Helmsley initially won the match, it was overturned due to his use of brass knuckles.
Logging a solid 48 minutes in the Rumble for his debut, Triple H walked away from the 1996 event with a lone elimination, Takao Omori, in conjunction with Jake Roberts. Despite limited results, Helmsley remained active over a long period of time before his eventual elimination at the hands of Diesel.
7 1999
Rounding out Triple H’s Royal Rumble appearances in the 90s, Triple H entered the fray at number 23. Over the 14 minutes that followed, Triple H would eliminate Jeff Jarrett and Val Venis before his elimination at the hands of Stone Cold Steve Austin.

His performance wasn’t spectacular, but Triple H looked great. The tribalism of rival factions active in WWF during this event was evident throughout, with members of various groups representing their teams. Despite his appearance with DX being among the best of The Game’s career, his performance here was lackluster, marking it on the lower end of his appearances in the event.
6 2010
In mid-2009, Triple H and Shawn Michaels reunited for the third iteration of DX, finding much success in the latter stages of their career. While these DX reunions are considered to be hollow imitations of the original faction, The Game and HBK did win their first tag team gold in the form of the Unified Tag Team Championship that December.
This is, of course, relevant in explaining Triple H’s performance in 2010. Entering 8th, Triple H wasn’t in a great position to win the Rumble. Nevertheless, Helmsley lasted almost 18 minutes and managed to singlehandedly eliminate CM Punk and Kane during that time.
When Michaels entered the bout at number 18, he had immense success. The champions teamed up to eliminate Drew McIntyre before John Cena got the upper hand over them. Triple H finally met his conclusion in the match after saving his partner from elimination, receiving a Sweet Chin Music to take him out of the ring.
5 2006
The 2006 event wasn’t Triple H’s first great Royal Rumble appearance, nor was it his most successful. It was, however, a great outing for The Game which saw him make it to the final three competitors. What makes this most impressive is that Helmsley entered the bout first overall, lasting over an hour in the match before being eliminated by the second entry and eventual winner, Rey Mysterio.
While six eliminations weren’t enough to take Triple H further, he did end up competing in a tournament to earn a WWE Championship opportunity at WrestleMania 22. Triple H got the match but ultimately lost to John Cena via submission.
4 2008
What’s one way to win a Royal Rumble? Enter at number 30. Unfortunately for The Game, John Cena got that memo during the 2008 Royal Rumble, winning the match from the number 30 spot. The Cerebral Assassin missed the mark by one, entering at number 29 and being the final superstar eliminated.

Tallying up six eliminations, Triple H bested Cody Rhodes, Mabel, Mick Foley, Elijah Burke, Kane, and Batista during his 11-minute run. The match reached its conclusion when the two men engaged in a series of reversals. In the end, The Game attempted a Pedigree on Cena which was reversed into an FU over the top rope to seal the deal.
3 2009
The following year saw Triple H fail to nail the entry number once again. During the 2009 event, The Game entered the Rumble at number 7, setting up shop for another long match. Just like the year prior, Triple H finished the match as the runner-up, finding himself eliminated by the 8th entrant, Randy Orton.
After both men had spent nearly an hour in the match, Triple H holding a slight edge at an even 50 minutes, Orton came out victorious. This victory was not earned alone. Besides Triple H, the three other final competitors were Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr., Orton’s teammates in The Legacy. Triple H eliminated two of his opponents before being blindsided and thrown out of the ring by Orton for the victory.
2 2016
Triple H’s ninth appearance in the Royal Rumble came a decade after his initial Rumble. Over the past decade, The Game seemingly picked up a few tips considering that he finally cracked the code Cena used against him in the 2008 Rumble. Entering the Rumble at number 30 gave Triple H just the advantage he needed to win the event – and he picked a great time to do so.
What made this event the best time? 2016 marked the first time in WWE history that the WWE World Heavyweight Championship was defended in the Royal Rumble match. What this means is, quite simply, that the winner of the Rumble was also the winner of the title. While champion Roman Reigns lasted until the final three, his entry at number one worked against him and to the benefit of The Game. An advantageous move by Dean Ambrose narrowed it down to the final two, and Trips sealed the deal for his 14th WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
1 2002
The top spot here belongs to Triple H’s first Royal Rumble victory for a number of reasons. To start, Triple H wasn’t the 30th entry in a match which would name the new champion. He was the 22nd entry in a match that would earn a title shot. Triple H earned that title shot, then proceeded to win that title match at WrestleMania X8.
Triple H looked the best in his career when he returned to WWE in 2002. The crowd reaction marked a high point for The Game’s career. Elevating him to the main event in such a short time following his absence was the best decision WWE could have made, and this event directly influenced how that played out. This was a memorable event that tops the list for Triple H.
