Jill Warrick’s fate in Final Fantasy 16 is not so much of a mystery after players have completed the PlayStation 5 game. The new character in the RPG series was announced along with Clive, Joshua, and Cid, as one of the protagonist’s closest allies. The character is Clive Rosfield’s childhood friend and when an adult, she is revealed to be the Dominant of the ice Eikon, Shiva. As a powerful bearer of Eikons, she is used as a tool by Rosaria in the wars that the kingdom participates in for control over the Mothercrystals and, consequently, the land’s aether.

However, Jill’s destiny in Final Fantasy 16 changes drastically when she's reunited with her childhood friend, Clive, many years after tragedy struck him and the entire Grand Duchy of Rosaria. Now tagging along with Clive and Cid’s group across the world of Valisthea, she found a new purpose in her life other than being a tool for mass destruction. Along with the newly found party, Jill Warrick could fight for a cause she believed in: aiding and liberating Bearers to live freely in a world without prejudice and in which they would not be used as weapons of war against other people.

Following Cid’s tragic death in Final Fantasy 16 during the group’s raid on the Mothercrystal at Drake’s Head, Jill takes on a more active role in Clive Rosfield’s life. She once again becomes his closest confidant and friend, and ultimately helps him find his own purpose by taking on Cid’s mission of liberation across Valisthea. After a long series of battles, Final Fantasy 16’s Jill chooses to bestow the burden of Shiva upon Clive, so that the protagonist may use the ice Eikon in battle against his foes – namely Ultima. This is at a point where they have acknowledged that they are romantic partners.

Jill Is Alive At The End Of Final Fantasy 16

Final Fantasy 16's Jill Warrick cries as she looks at the sunrise.

Following a few more battles and missions on the way, brothers Clive and Joshua decide they will face Ultima in its lair, Origin. This battle at the end of Final Fantasy 16 sees Clive leave Jill and Torgal back at the Hideaway, as it is a fight that can only be endured by those who possess the power of Eikons – and seeing as she set herself free from Shiva, Final Fantasy 16’s Jill would just be in danger by being within Ultima’s reach. After an emotional exchange of words and a straightforward declaration of love and feelings for each other, Clive and Jill say their goodbyes.

While the protagonist sets off with his brother to face Ultima, Jill continues to help the refugees at the Hideaway. Her presence there is not shown in abundance, as the game follows Clive Rosfield and his battle against the title’s antagonist. Nevertheless, Jill is actually shown once again nearing the ending, right after Clive defeats Ultima. Following his victory, Clive returns to his brother and uses the powers of Phoenix to save Joshua from death in Final Fantasy 16. Then, Clive is shown realizing that his best chance at liberating Valisthea from the plague of the Mothercrystals is by destroying them.

Clive uses all his Eikonic powers to destroy the source Mothercrystal at Origin and after a huge explosion, a cutscene shows Clive laying on the beach, nearing his end. He raises his hand and sees that he used all the magic his body could withhold and is now petrifying – the fate of Bearers that use too much magic. He tries to use magic and realizes he cannot, fading away while looking at the moon. This marks Clive’s death in Final Fantasy 16. Meanwhile, in the Hideaway, one of the refugees there is giving birth, and Final Fantasy 16’s Jill Warrick is aiding in the delivery.

Jill notices Torgal sadly looking out the window, up to the moon, and approaches him. There, she looks at the moon and realizes that the red star near it flickers and then fades away. Jill immediately starts crying, as she realizes that Clive completed his mission, but that she will not be able to see him again. She runs out of the room and toward a balcony, and Torgal follows her. There, she cries freely for Clive’s passing, and Torgal howls at the moon. Despite the fate of their beloved one, Jill is alive and well at the end of Final Fantasy 16.

Post-Credits Scene Suggests Jill Dies In Final Fantasy 16

Even though she is alive when Clive concludes his mission, there are reasons to believe that Jill ends up dead after Final Fantasy 16. This is because, after her cutscene, in which she cries for Clive’s death, the credits roll and, after that, there is a short post-credits scene. This cutscene shows a family in an unknown time period, but there are hints that it is played out in the far future. A child helps his mother by lighting a fire for supper by using a flint but complains that he does not have magic powers to do it more easily.

His mother then proceeds to say that he has been reading too much of the tale in the child’s book, “Final Fantasy,” written by the game’s very own Joshua Rosfield. Although this comes as a confirmation that Clive’s brother survived the events of Origin, it also hints at Jill’s death in Final Fantasy 16. During the interaction between child and mother, it is given to understand that magic is something from fairy tales, and does not exist in the world they inhabit. This means that enough time has passed that people do not even acknowledge that magic once existed in the world and only see it as fiction.

It is likely that centuries have passed since the events seen in the main portion of the game and Valisthea is now free of aether and magic. This also means that Jill died in Final Fantasy 16, but most likely due to old age, many years ago. The post-credits scene serves only to show that Clive’s sacrifice made the world a better place, but it does confirm that the characters seen throughout Final Fantasy 16 are now nothing more than fairy tale heroes.
