Summary

  • The update on Chris Hemsworth's Hulk Hogan biopic reveals that Netflix no longer has the "life rights" to Hogan, which presents a setback for the production.
  • Hemsworth's previous comments about the movie needing certain elements to come together for it to happen now seem more pessimistic in light of this failed business arrangement.
  • The scheduling challenges faced by Hogan, Phillips, and Hemsworth may result in the project needing to find a new production team, indicating that the future of the biopic is less secure now that it has left Netflix.

Chris Hemsworth’s Hulk Hogan biopic gets an update from the real-life wrestler. Making a name for himself notably as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Hemsworth was set to take on legendary wrestler Hulk Hogan in an upcoming biopic. Upon its announcement, the biographical movie was slated to be produced by Netflix and directed by Todd Phillips (Joker, The Hangover).

Hulk Hogan now has an update concerning the project. Hogan told Comicbook.com that Netflix no longer has the “life rights” to Hogan due to an unfortunately timed “business situation.” Hogan still remains hopeful that “Todd Phillips and Chris Hemsworth will still want to play.” Check out the full quote from Hogan below:

"It was a situation where business-wise, Netflix kind of missed the date as far as a business situation. I had a choice at that time to switch gears. My life rights and stuff are somewhere else now and there's a lot of things that are getting ready to happen. Hopefully, [director] Todd Phillips and Chris Hemsworth will still want to play, there's still a huge opportunity there."

This failed business arrangement is bad news for the production of the Hulk Hogan movie. His update confirms previous pessimistic views about the Hulk Hogan movie set forth by Hemsworth, who claimed that “a lot of things need to come together” for the movie to take off the ground. When they were formerly attached to Netflix and included such big names, it seemed more hopeful that Hulk Hogan may still eventually get off the ground. Now detached from the major streaming platform, that future seems far less secure.

Hulk Hogan will also face scheduling challenges should Hogan and the new rights-holder attempt to maintain a relationship with Phillips and Hemsworth. In the case of Phillips, he is hard at work in production for Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to his 2019 film Joker. Hemsworth is also involved in multiple major projects, including Extraction 3, Furiosa, and Transformers One.

As such, Hulk Hogan may have to continue with another production team as the project leaves Netflix. Between his muscular physique and charisma, Hemsworth would have been a perfect fit to play Hogan. Unfortunately, Hulk Hogan may not be in Hemsworth’s future after all, despite having been attached to the project since 2019.
