Chainsaw Man Confirms Denji's Best Love Interest Isn't Makima or Power
Chainsaw Man's main character Denji has had various love interests throughout the series, but his newest Asa combines all their best qualities.
Warning! Spoilers for Chainsaw Man Chapter 116!Denji has had multiple potential love interests throughout Chainsaw Man, but his latest combines all the best qualities of previous characters like Power and Makima into one. This is a good sign for Denji, as his love life up until this point has been filled with manipulation and tragedy. And while his new love interest Asa Mitaka also has ulterior motives for dating him, she seems less cold-hearted in her manipulation than his previous potential romantic partners.
In Chapter 112 of Chainsaw Man, Asa approaches Denji asking for a date so she can potentially turn him into a weapon to use against Chainsaw Man, but it isn’t until Chapter 116 that they both start to actually see each other’s good qualities. After the two become trapped by Chainsaw Man's mysteriously revived Eternity Devil, they start to open up a bit more around each other. Denji reveals to Asa why he is so desperate for money, and Asa shows that she can be fun to be around when she isn’t lecturing. In fact, Denji even says that she reminds him of an old friend after she makes a dramatic exclamation about how fun she can be. This friend is clearly Power, who used to behave similarly. But Asa’s resemblance to other women in Denji’s life isn’t just limited to the Blood fiend.
Denji’s main love interests in Part 1 of Chainsaw Man were Makima, Power, and Reze. While he did fondle Power’s breasts, that was largely the extent of their romantic entanglement and Power became more of a sibling to him from that point onwards. Reze was Denji's first love interest in Chainsaw Man who was a human around his own age and the two had a somewhat genuine relationship until it was revealed that Reze was actually the Bomb Devil hybrid and initially got closer to Denji just to literally steal his heart. However, after this deception was revealed, Reze admitted that she did have genuine feelings for Denji and the two almost ran away together before Makima killed her. Makima was Denji’s first and last love, the manipulative Control Devil who only cared about Denji for Chainsaw Man.
Asa Combines Power, Makima, and Reze's Best Qualities
While Asa does share some of the negative qualities of these love interests, she is largely a mix of the more positive aspects of each. She is fun and dramatic like Power, around Denji’s age and organically developing feelings for him like Reze, and assertive like Makima. Although this last trait can be a bad thing, it also allows her to convince Denji to cooperate with her plan to escape the aquarium. And Denji has already shown that he has grown enough to speak out when she is trying to control him too much, such as when he defied her date plan to see the penguins.
Asa still does have the ulterior motive of turning Denji into a weapon, but their time in the aquarium seems to be softening her resolve to do this as she grows to care about Denji more. This of course be laying the groundwork for an even more tragic betrayal later on, as Chainsaw Man author Tatsuki Fujimoto is known for doing. But hopefully, it is all setting up Asa to be Denji’s perfect love interest and laying the groundwork for the two to have a happy ending together when Chainsaw Man ends.
