Brigid Flynn

Professional Background

Dr. Brigid Flynn is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at The University of Kansas Medical Center. She is Chief of the Division of Critical Care, Co-Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Director of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for The University of Kansas Medical Center and Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgical Intensive Care Unit Anesthesiology Resident rotation.

Dr. Flynn received her medical degree from The University of Kansas Medical School followed by residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She then completed her Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She worked as anesthesiologist and intensivist at Mount Sinai Medical Center from 2007-2011. She was also Residency Didactic Program Director and Faculty for the Human Emulation, Education and Evaluation Lab for Patient Safety and Professional Study (HELPS), Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Medical Center. From 2011-2014, she worked at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and served as the Associate Director for the Cardiothoracic Surgical Intensive Care Unit. She also served as the Assistant Program Director of the Core Residency Program.

In 2014, she returned to her roots at the University of Kansas Medical Center as an anesthesiologist and intensivist. She serves on numerous hospital committees including Critical Care Committee, Physician Practice Council and the COVID19 Surge Planning Committee. She is co-founder and Faculty for the institution-wide educational series, Critical Care Grand Rounds. Additionally, she is the recipient of three Ruth Bohan Awards to bring national speakers to The University of Kansas Medical Center. She has also been awarded a grant from the American Medical Educators (AME) for a project utilizing self-simulation in hemodynamic education. Within the Department of Anesthesiology, she is Chair of the Anesthesiology Research Committee and also serves on several other committees.

Nationally, Dr. Flynn is involved in several societies and was elected in a national election to the Board of Directors of the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiology. She reviews abstracts for several national meetings including the International Anesthesia Research Society and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Scholastically, she is Chief Editor of a textbook titled, “What Do I Do Now: Cardiothoracic Critical Care” edition. Lastly, she frequently participates as a lecturer at The University of Kansas Medical Center, as well as national and international conferences and institutions.
