A good portion of WWE fans aren't happy following Friday night's episode of SmackDown. While the buzz of The Rock versus Roman Reigns is akin to Andre vs Hogan and WWE is choosing to pay off a Bloodline storyline that has been nearly three years in the making, parts of the WWE Universe are upset that Cody Rhodes is seemingly being pushed aside and getting lost in the shuffle. After winning the Royal Rumble and having the right to main event WrestleMania 40, The American Nightmare inexplicably walked away from the opportunity so the Rock could step in.
There wasn't much time to explain it on SmackDown, and Cody will likely set it up so he can do so on Raw, but fans are still upset. Many think this was Cody's spot. They rightfully believe he's earned it, having waited a full year after not getting his moment at last year's WrestleMania.
WWE Smackdown Winners and Losers: Cody and Roman Play Their Hands
This week's SmackDown ended with a long promo segment that saw both Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes show their respective hands.Likely seeing the reaction to WWE's decision online, -- or because she's just proud of him for thinking about WWE before thinking about himself -- Cody's wife, Brandi Rhodes took to social media and wrote, "Quarterback." The implication here is that he's handing off the ball to someone else and simply running an offense so the team can win. In many ways, she's right. Being a student of the business and understanding promotion, Cody gets the draw that is Reigns vs. The Rock. That storyline also needs the payoff. At the same time, WWE has had a lot of negative attention drawn to it with the Vince McMahon allegations and distancing itself from Brock Lesnar. The Rock's inclusion at WrestleMania draws the attention of people more positively.
As for Cody, perhaps Brandi is hinting he'll score the touchdown later, or on a different play.
Fans Are Getting Worked Up Without All The Information
No doubt, wrestling fans are emotional. They see what they think is an opportunity being taken from Cody and they're reacting. If that's what WWE is doing here, they have every right to be disappointed. The only issue is, they don't know that's what WWE is doing. Many are ignoring the balls the company is trying to juggle after unexpected instances have created a shift and The Rock's availability creates an opportunity.
Cody may know something different. WWE may have other plans. The story has to have been written for Cody and it certainly isn't finished.
