Backstage News On Plans For AJ Styles And Jeff Hardy At SummerSlam [Spoiler]

SummerSlam is just around the corner and a couple of key members of the SmackDown roster don't have places on the typically busy card. Knowing there are at least two major players that need something to do, what are the plans for AJ Styles and Jeff Hardy at this summer's biggest party?

It's rare to see the Intercontinental Championship not up for grabs at one of WWE's biggest pay-per-views. As such, it's logical to expect that AJ Styles will have a match on the card. So too, Jeff Hardy recently returned to WWE and has been featured on the blue brand in recent weeks, most notably in a Bar Fight with Sheamus. As of now, neither competitor is set to have a match.

Speculation is that they'll wrestle each other.

Hardy vs. Styles is reportedly planned for SummerSlam and the seeds of their feud were planted at this week's SmackDown tapings. The show will air tomorrow night and PWInsider reports the match will be set in motion during that show.

Styles hasn't had much in the way of a feud he can sink his teeth into since returning to the SmackDown brand. He won the title in a tournament, then retained over Gran Metalik, Matt Riddle, and Drew Gulak but he's not had an adversary, so to speak. Hardy is just sort of in limbo now that Sheamus has taken issue with King Corbin.

WWE seems to have said, 'You need a match, and you need a match... here you go.'

The Card So Far

As it stands now the card features a WWE Title match between Randy Orton and Drew McIntyre, a Universal Title Match between The Fiend and Braun Strowman along with matches that include the Raw Tag Team Championships, United States Title, Raw Women's Title and SmackDown Women's Championship. All that is left is an IC Title match and the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.

The 2020 SummerSlam pay-per-view is scheduled to air live on August 23.
