When competing in WWE under the name of “Ember Moon”, Athena’s most notable stretch was her run in NXT when she feuded with “The Empress Of Tomorrow” Asuka. Both women headed into their rivalry as undefeated forces, so the result was unpredictable heading into their first match at NXT TakeOver: Orlando in 2017. It was Asuka who managed to emerge victorious, though this feud led to Asuka blurring the lines between babyface and heel, showcasing more desperation than ever before.
This whole storyline was centered around Athena being the one to come the closest to dethroning the unbeatable champion, but in the end she just could not get the job done. Their matches were some of the best in NXT history, particularly in the women’s division. In fact, aside from Sasha Banks vs. Bayley, Asuka & Athena’s matches were among the best NXT women’s matches ever.

Athena Won The Title At NXT TakeOver: WarGames 2017

Although Athena was unable to defeat Asuka, she took advantage of the situation when Asuka relinquished the NXT Women’s Championship due to an injury and imminent main roster call up. Athena was thrown into the mix at NXT TakeOver: WarGames 2017 in a fatal four way also involving Kairi Sane, Peyton Royce, and Nikki Cross, and she emerged victorious with the vacant championship, winning her first gold in WWE.
For the next 140 days she remained champion, defending against the likes of Sonya Deville and Shayna Baszler. It was Baszler though who bounced back and managed to finally end Athena’s reign as champion at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans 2018. In her second spell in NXT, Athena would also become one half of the NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions alongside Shotzi, as the two defeated Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai.

Athena was released from WWE in 2021, and in 2022 she was signed to AEW. After several months of up and down booking, she turned heel and went over to Ring Of Honor. The new-look ROH brand had a women’s division built around Athena as she defeated Mercedes Martinez at the Final Battle 2022 PPV to win the ROH Women’s World Championship.
As of this writing, Athena has surpassed 420 days as ROH Women’s World Championship and has been incredibly dominant throughout her time with the gold.
