9 WCW Tag Teams Who Wore Face Paint

In WCW, face paint wasn’t as big a deal as in other companies. Sure, there was Sting and guys like Vampiro and the KISS Demon, but also a reliance on guys in masks. A few times, someone in face paint could be part of a team, yet aside from the Road Warriors, regularly painted tag teams weren’t a major thing.

Yet there were a few occasions when both guys on a team would wear some paint. Sometimes, it was just for one night, although it was interesting to see a regular team both boasting some colored faces. The list isn’t that long but notable as these teams did rock the face paint in unique ways in WCW.

9 The Road Warriors

As the men who paved the way for face paint in wrestling, it’s no surprise the Legion of Doom kicks off this list. In 1996, the Road Warriors made a big return to WCW, still in their old gear and rocking that great face paint.

They had a few feuds, including challenging Sting and Lex Luger for the tag titles and battling Harlem Heat. However, Hawk and Animal didn’t stick around long, supposedly wanting more pay and push and so left for a WWE return. Still, it was something seeing the Road Warriors clashing

with a new generation of WCW stars.

8 Sting And Road Warrior Hawk

Before that 1996 return, Road Warrior Hawk made a go of it as a singles worker in 1993. Animal was in his corner sometimes but held back by injuries. So Hawk instead teamed up with Sting for some tag team matches, a couple on Clash of the Champions and some TV shows.

They weren’t too bad, although it was still odd seeing Hawk in the ring with anyone but Animal. Hawk left in just a few months, yet Sting showed he could have been an honorary Road Warrior if he wanted it.

7 Sting, Lex Luger And Randy Savage

War Games Team

Lex Luger and Randy Savage didn’t seem like face paint guys, but twice they did with Sting. The first was when the trio joined with Hulk Hogan for War Games at Fall Brawl 1995. They went full-out with military-styled clothing and makeup, which matched Hogan’s.

The three then took to Sting-like face paint for Bash at the Beach 1996 when facing the Outsiders. Sting was obviously the best of the bunch, but still a good team bonding with the paint.

6 The Powers Of Pain

This sort of comes in under the wire as Jim Crockett Promotions was shifting into WCW with the Turner purchase. With WWE already having Demolition, JCP decided there was room for another Road Warriors knock-off. Warlord and Barbarian were pitted against the Warriors in a feud that injured Animal, smashing him into a weight bench.

They had several matches with plans for a scaffold match. But before that happened, the Powers bailed for a big WWE payday and feud with Demolition, so their tenure was shorter than expected.

5 Insane Clown Posse

The Deadpool

While known as rappers, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope were also wrestlers in the indie scene and ECW. So, of course, WCW signed them on after a brief WWE stint in 1999. They were part of some stables like the Dead Pool and the Dark Carnival, challenging for the tag titles and feuding with Public Enemy and 3 Count.

Their wild makeup could vary from match to match and always in hardcore brawls. They left in 2000 after Shaggy was injured but still sparked up the tag team scene in a rough period for WCW.

4 Vampiro And Great Muta

The Dark Carnival in WCW

Vampiro could be an on-off wrestler in WCW as sometimes he could turn in good matches while other times in some ugly feuds. But an inspired idea had him paired up with Japanese legend the Great Muta, who was making a WCW comeback.

These two actually won the tag titles and were not bad together, with Vampiro the powerhouse and Muta the light guy doing flying moves. Their makeup made them stand out even more, and while the team was short-lived, it was great for the time it was briefly in.

3 Sting And Vampiro

Linked to Vampiro again is this wild program with Sting. They were paired together simply on their face paint and being outsiders and weren't bad with Sting seeming to give Vampiro the rub.

Naturally, the partnership didn't last long with Vampiro turning on Sting, leading to a crazy feud involving a graveyard match. Still, that partnership counts for this brief "Brotherhood of Paint."

2 Dungeon Of Doom

The Zodiac

This bizarre stable was a wild one, and it made an odd sense a few guys wore face paint in it. There was the old favorite Kamala with his classic “wild man” face paint. Then, Ed Leslie as the Zodiac, whose face could be black on one side, white on the other, or mixed like a zebra.

Then there was Avalanche, now calling himself the Shark, who had red and white stripes around his mouth meant to emulate a shark’s jaws. Leading them all was Kevin Sullivan, a pioneer in face paint with some strange styles. The paint may have been the most notable part of the bunch for one of the weirder teams WCW ever saw.

1 Sting And The Ultimate Warrior

Sting Ultimate Warrior

For one night, the former Blade Runners reunited. As soon as Warrior joined WCW, it seemed inevitable he and Sting would meet up again, their first teaming since 1986. It happened on the October 12, 1998 edition of Monday Nitro as they faced Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart, another dream team.

Sting, in his Wolfpac makeup, did most of the wrestling with Warrior hanging out on the apron, still wearing his jacket. He was finally tagged in for a messy brawl ending with an NWO run-in, but at least Sting and Warrior got together again before Warrior left WCW.
