5 Things AEW Got Right (& 5 Things They Got Wrong)

AEW's Full Gear was a resounding success overall, with the company putting together one of its strongest shows to date. From top to bottom, the event was well-paced, had a nice variety of matches, and every single performer brought 110% to their performances, which was met by a lively crowd in Florida.

The company got a lot right with this show, which is why people have been so overwhelmingly positive about it. However, as is the case with any wrestling event, there were certain moments that could have gone better. After all, nothing is perfect and that was the case with Full Gear as well.

10 Got Right: Dream Match Delivered

Young Bucks v FTR

The Young Bucks facing FTR is a match that has been years in the making. There was a ton of pressure on both teams to deliver something special at this show, and that is exactly what all four men did.

It was tag team wrestling at its very best and it was beautiful to see. With callbacks to old matches, nods to other teams, and a true battle of styles, this match was absolute perfection.

9 Got Wrong: Hikaru Shida's Power Moves

Hikaru Shida

Hikaru Shida is always going to be an underdog in any match she has against Nyla Rose, therefore seeing her hit power moves will always be a big moment. However, throughout her title match, Rose attacked the champion's leg consistently.

It would have been nice to see Hikaru really sell that injury and be unable to hit those types of moves. This type of selling is what makes a good match great, and that stopped that from happening with this particular bout.

8 Got Right: Pacing The Show

Full Gear

Pacing a PPV is something that a lot of fans take for granted as it isn't as easy as it might seem. It's important for shows to have good flow, with matches of different lengths being spread out, allowing big moments to shine and get their time, while less important sections can be filled in.

In the past, AEW has struggled with this, particularly at All Out earlier this year. However, that wasn't a problem with this show, as everything about the pacing was spot on, which is why the event breezed by.

7 Got Wrong: Fans Without Masks

AEW Fans At Daily's Place

Right now, having live fans at a wrestling show is something that is a risk within itself, but it is something that AEW has done a good job with. The company has got controlled numbers and separates everyone well and having the atmosphere really adds to the show.

But at Full Gear, there seemed to be a lot of people choosing not to wear masks, or not wearing them properly. AEW continued to show that on camera, which was a mistake, and it highlights that there is still work to be done here with AEW needing to be even stricter.

6 Got Right: MJF Joins The Inner Circle

mjf in the inner circle

The match between MJF and Chris Jericho was a decent one, but it was the decision to have MJF win that was the real talking point. This was absolutely the right call as it puts MJF into The Inner Circle.

This is going to create a lot of fun between them, with the two men having great chemistry, which should keep the stable feeling as important as possible. It is a storyline fans are enjoying, so committing to it is certainly a wise move from AEW.

5 Got Wrong: Cinematic Match Commentary

Gangrel AEW

Having a cinematic match during this pandemic period of wrestling is fine, after all, there have been so many now that fans have just become used to it. The Elite Deletion match was fun and had some real physicality to it, but something that let it down was the commentary.

Overall, the announce team did a great job at Full Gear, but there was a clear disconnect with this one. It was obvious JR (who had a stellar night), didn't 'get' the world that Matt Hardy has created, and the random comments from them just didn't work overall.

4 Got Right: The Elite Stand Tall

The Elite

Something that fans have wanted from the moment that AEW began is for The Elite to be a dominant trio in the company. Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks have sat back and allowed others to shine so far, but at Full Gear, they got their time to rule.

Omega became the number one contender to the World Title, while The Young Bucks won the Tag Team Titles. It was a big evening for The Elite and it is just the beginning of their rise in AEW, which will only take the company to another level.

3 Got Wrong: No Microphone For I Quit Match

Kingston vs Moxley

Typically, when an I Quit match happens the referee is given a microphone so that everyone can clearly hear when a wrestler does or doesn't quit. However, that wasn't the case with the main event, instead, the referee just asked the wrestlers and sometimes it could be heard, and other times it couldn't.

The big issue with that is that when the finish of the match came as Jon Moxley choked out Eddie Kingston with the barbed wire, nobody heard him. It led to a slightly flat finish, rather than the big moment that it deserved.

2 Got Right: Darby Allin Wins Gold

Darby Allin and Cody Rhodes

AEW has done a great job building Darby Allin so far, as he really channels that Jeff Hardy style attitude of being willing to do whatever it takes, which fans love. His match with Cody was a lot of fun and seeing Darby Allin finally defeat him to win the TNT Championship was great.

It was something fans have wanted to see and the reaction from the live crowd reflected that. The manner in which this was booked was also tremendous, with Darby refusing to be beaten, no matter what Cody threw at him.

1 Got Wrong: NWA Women's Title Means More

Thunder Rosa and Serena Deeb

This is an ongoing issue for AEW, but once again at Full Gear, the NWA Women's Championship felt like it means more to the company than its own title. While it was the AEW Women's Championship match on the main show, there was a bigger story put into the pre-show match.

After Serena Deeb defended her title, Thunder Rosa appeared to confront her, setting up a big match for the future. Meanwhile, the AEW Women's Title match ended with Vickie Guerrero slapping Nyla Rose, so no wonder the NWA Women's Title means more right now.
