49ers Acquire Pro Bowler Trent Williams In Blockbuster Trade With Redskins

Trent Williams, one of the biggest names on the trade market dating back to the start of last season, is finally moving on.

During the final day of the 2020 draft, the San Francisco 49ers acquired the seven-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle from the Washington Redskins in exchange for a 2020 fifth-rounder and a 2021 third-round pick, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

In a followup tweet, Schefter stated added that 49ers Pro Bowl tackle Joe Staley "is expected to retire." The future Hall of Famer, according to Schefter, wanted to make sure the 49ers had a suitable replacement.

And so ends the lengthy and inexcusable drama that Washington ownership and management created last year. The rebuilding Redskins get more draft capital as they begin the Ron Rivera regime.

Williams' relationship with the Redskins quickly soured last year, when doctors had to remove a cancerous growth from his head. Team doctors failed to realize the severity of the growth, and Williams understandably lost his faith in the medical staff and organization.

In a head-scratching decision, the Redskins decided not to trade Williams, who sat out the entire 2019 season. Washington could have easily landed a first or second-round pick as part of a return for Williams. But they waited and waited until the 2020 draft, and it cost them.

But it's all done with now. Williams will join a team that was just a few plays away from winning the Super Bowl last year, and he promises to provide an even greater boost to Kyle San Francisco's already stout offensive line.

49ers Are Clear Winners

There's no denying that San Francisco won this trade. They're landing a future Hall of Famer for only two mid-round selections, and if Williams signs an extension, it'll be an even greater win for the 49ers. GM John Lynch pieced together one of the quickest and most impressive rebuilds in NFL history, and now he lands one of the league's best tackles at a bargain price. As if the future in San Francisco wasn't bright enough already.
