10 Thrillers To Binge If You Liked Ari Aster's Midsommar
Midsommar is Ari Aster's most recent masterpiece of a thriller. There are some similar movies to check out for more of that vibe.
Ari Aster is a genius when it comes to the horror and thriller genre, but unlike the paranormal and terrifying Hereditary, Midsommar offers a thrilling drama filled with nothing but humanity. For those that can't get enough of its beautiful cinematography, stellar cast, or chilling storyline, it's time to binge some more thrillers.
Not every thriller is a horror movie, and this list is for those that want to stay away from the nightmares of ghosts and possession. For a psychological thriller along the same lines as Midsommar, look no further than these riveting and mind-bending movies.
10 The Lighthouse (2019)
The Lighthouse isn't nearly as disturbing as Midsommar, so it's a good place to start, but it's certainly enough to still throw viewers' minds for a loop and have them on the edge of their seat. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson are two lighthouse keepers - an arrogant newbie and a tough veteran.
Stranded in a storm, reality begins to merge with fantasy, and this hallucinatory treat will excite any who loved that aspect of Aster's thriller. There's suspense, intensity, and psychological thrills.
9 The Witch (2015)
There's room for more A24 on this list, and Robert Eggers directed this sinister masterpiece (just like The Lighthouse). As far as this list goes, it's certainly more on the horror side of things, but it's this iconic movie studio at its finest.
With Anya Taylor-Joy, a family in the 1630s comes face to face with witchcraft and magic - all in the wilderness of their devout Christian household. This movie is about a family facing its sins and is mesmerizing from start to finish. It's as mind-twisting as Midsommar and equally entertaining.
8 A Cure For Wellness (2016)
This thriller is perfect for those who like to stay away from anything mystical or paranormal. Taking place in a 'wellness center,' an executive is sent to retrieve his CEO - but the place is much harder to leave than anticipated.
The line between wellness and illness is blurred, and this flick is a mind-twisting experience that will have viewers totally invigorated and utterly confused. This psychological thriller isn't for the faint of heart.
7 Apostle (2018)
For those that can't get enough of religious cults, this is the next binge to set your sights on. Apostle takes place way back in 1905 when a drifter in search of his kidnapped sister finds himself caught in the mix with a cult on an island.
This commune is dangerous and has no plan of letting either of them go, and this movie provides a story that just gets more sinister and deeper as the film progresses. For a psychological thriller that's all about cults and family, this Netflix Original is a must-see.
6 Annihilation (2018)
For more female leads and mind-twisting plots, Annihilation will not disappoint. There's more action and an out-of-this-world phenomenon, but it's just as thrilling and chilling as Ari Aster's work.
With the always talented Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Tessa Thompson, a biologist takes a team into the forest - to a zone where the laws of biology have mysteriously ceased to exist. It's hallucinogenic, suspenseful, mind-bending, and totally entertaining.
5 Mother! (2017)
Jennifer Lawrence shows just how versatile she is in this horror thriller. Starring alongside Javier Bardem, a couple lives in a serene home in total peace, when intruders suddenly come to visit - and won't leave. This movie is confusing, riveting, and definitely requires some research afterward.
Still, it's thrilling in every moment with violence and drama, and Lawrence gives one of her best performances to date. Like Midsommar, it has a female lead, a confusing but masterful storyline, and some surprisingly beautiful scenes.
4 The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (2017)
Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell team up for this psychological thriller. A doctor specializing in cardiovascular treatment finds a teenage patient inserting himself further and further into his family's lives, with each way more unsettling than the last.
This movie is riveting, disturbing, and certainly unique. It's as bone-chilling and eerie as Aster's flick, and it's definitely time to get binging Kidman and Farrell in these different roles.
3 The Ritual (2017)
The Ritual also follows a group of friends in Sweden, so it's definitely worth the watch. However, this one takes on a more horror-esque feel, as the characters find themselves being stalked in the woods by an unknown being.
This hidden gem is a Netflix Original that will certainly fulfill all the cravings of Midsommar fans for a different environment, unknown forces, and a suspenseful and thrilling ride.
2 Climax (2018)
For those that love the hallucinatory mystery that Aster brought to the big screen, Climax is just the right next binge. A group of dancers gather in a remote building to rehearse, but their night morphs into a thrilling and wild evening after being drugged with LSD.
It's a drama thriller that will mystify and entertain, and give fans the same riveting and hallucinogenic ride that Midsommar has to offer. It's a hidden gem that shouldn't be missed.
1 Hereditary (2018)
It's impossible to truly love Midsommar without having seen Ari Aster's other huge horror hit: Hereditary. After their grandmother dies, a family finds themselves plagued with the horrors she left behind and haunted by tragedy after tragedy.
This one is definitely more horror than thriller, but it's a perfect double-feature for fans of Ari Aster. Toni Collette gives the performance of a lifetime, and it's one that will have viewers thinking about it for days afterwards.
