10 Things You Should Know About The Steiner Family
When it comes to tag teams that fans consider the best of all time, the conversation tends to include The Steiner Brothers alongside fellow legends like The Road Warriors, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, and The Crush Gals. Composed of real-life brothers Rick and Scott Steiner, the Steiner Brothers made an impression on fans watching not only WWE, but also WCW, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, and beyond.

Now, with Rick’s son wrestling in WWE as Bron Breakker, the Steiners can be considered a full-on wrestling family. Let’s take a look at all three men and what fans should know about them, including their pre-wrestling athletic endeavors.
10 Rick & Scott Both Competed In Wrestling At University Of Michigan
Hailing from Bay City, Michigan, both Rick and Scott Steiner didn’t just follow the same path into professional wrestling — they also did the same through amateur wrestling. As the older brother, Rick went to college first, wrestling for the University of Michigan and ranking high in the Big Ten Championships. Scott followed in his brother's footsteps in pretty much the exact same way, also attending U of M and also doing very well in the Big Ten. Their accomplishments would later become a matter of kayfabe, as their alma mater was part of their presentation in WWE.
9 Bron Breakker’s Football Background
Rick’s son Bronson — better known to NXT fans as Bron Breakker — competed in amateur wrestling in high school, but ended up focusing on a different sport before pro wrestling. The future Breakker’s main sport in high school was football, which he continued playing while attending Kennesaw State University in Georgia. While he wasn’t drafted to the NFL upon graduating college, Bron Breakker did end up signing to the Baltimore Ravens in 2020, where he was released from the team after a few months.
8 Rick Steiner Debuted First
A meeting with WWE legend George “The Animal” Steele led Rick Steiner to pursue pro wrestling immediately out of college. Making his debut in 1983, Steiner ended up wrestling for the American Wrestling Association and The Universal Wrestling Federation before moving on to Jim Crockett Promotions (later known as WCW). Initially a singles wrestler, Steiner ended up becoming a part of the amateur wrestling-themed heel faction The Varsity Club with Mike Rotunda and Kevin Sullivan, among others.

It was in 1987 that Steiner captured his first tag team championship, the UWF Tag Team Championship. It wasn’t with his brother Scott, however — instead it was with another up-and-comer, Sting.
7 Scott Steiner Debut As Rick’s Cornerman
Eventually, Rick Steiner was betrayed by his Varsity Club stablemates, which led to him feuding with Mike Rotunda for the NWA World Television Title in late 1988. Around this time, Scott Steiner — who made his in-ring debut in 1987 — began accompanying his newly babyface brother to the ring for his matches. From there, it wasn’t long before Scott stepped into the ring himself, tagging with Rick and eventually capturing their first tag team championship together when they defeated The Fabulous Freebirds.
6 Rick & Scott Are Decorated Tag Team Champions
With that aforementioned title win — the NWA World Tag Team Championship — The Steiner Brothers began putting together a tremendous legacy in tag team wrestling. In total, Rick and Scott would hold a dozen tag team championships together in the following promotions: WCW, WWE, and NJPW,, with defending the belts against such teams like The Midnight Express, Money Inc., and Harlem Heat. Their longest reign was in 1991 when they defeated Hiroshi Hase and Kensuke Sasaki for the IWGP Tag Team Championship, holding the title for 229 days.
5 Scott Betrayed Rick In 1998
The Steiner Brothers were a devoted tag team for most of the 1990s, including in WCW, where — upon returning to the promotion in 1996 — they were a regular thorn in the side of the New World Order’s resident star tag team The Outsiders, often battling for the WCW World Tag Team Championship. Despite their in-ring success, Scott Steiner ended up betraying his brother during a tag team match against The Outsiders in 1998, defecting to the nWo and turning heel.
4 Both Steiner Brothers Had Singles Success
While Rick Steiner at first remained in the tag team division following Scott’s heel turn, the older brother eventually moved on to begin a singles star again, which he hadn’t really done since the 1980s. He proved pretty successful at it, too, capturing WCW’s TV and United States Titles.

Of course, Scott Steiner benefitted the most from the split. Changing his look and his persona, the younger brother became the bleach-blond, freak-obsessed maniac nicknamed “Big Poppa Pump.” In addition to developing an incredible promo style, Scott Steiner also reached the top of WCW as a singles star, defeating Booker T to capture the WCW World Title.
3 How Bron Breakker Got His Ring Name
Signing to WWE in early 2021, Bronson Rechsteiner (his real name) seemed destined to debut as some variation on Bronson Steiner by the time of his debut later that year. However, when it came time for the son of Rick Steiner to debut on the newly revamped NXT 2.0, he came out with the ridiculous ring name of Bron Breakker. Fans eventually got used to the name, which actually was in reference to his tendency to “break” his opponents when blocking them during his football career.
2 Rick Steiner Took Part In A Bron Breakker Storyline
Following his debut in September 2021, it was only a matter of months before Bron Breakker captured the NXT Championship when he defeated developmental veteran Tommaso Ciampa. From there, a hit-or-miss title reign ensued, which included a massively disappointing feud against vaguely supernatural cult leader Joe Gacy. At the time of the feud, The Steiner Brothers were back in the WWE fold as part of the 2022 Hall of Fame, so Rick Steiner was incorporated into his son’s angle, getting kidnapped by the villainous Gacy.
1 Scott Steiner Owned A Shoney's
Every aging wrestler needs something to fall back on once their in-ring career is over, and Scott Steiner embarked on a venture that may surprise many fans: restaurateur. In 2016, Steiner found himself opening a Shoney’s restaurant in Acworth, Georgia, with fans finding out via a video of Scott and his brother demolishing the old building in order to build a new one. Lasting about four years, Steiner’s location featured a little exhibit of his wrestling career and the very real possibility that Big Poppa Pump himself might be there. Unfortunately, the restaurant was forced to close in 2020 due to COVID.
