10 Things Fans Should Know About Macho Man Randy Savage's Time In The nWo

Randy Savage was an underrated member of the New World Order that doesn’t get talked about enough for his time in the group. The group started off hot with the trio of Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan. Many fans and pundits felt that adding more members were a mistake. That was true for names like Vincent, Michael Wallstreet and Big Bubba Rogers joining the group.

However, the addition of Savage added another mega-star and gave them a member that contributed to the group. Savage had arguably his best WCW run as a member of the heel faction. WCW experimented with him in new scenarios for his first time as a heel in the promotion. The following Savage moments in the nWo deserve another look back.

10 Teased Alliance With Sting Before Joining NWO

Sting Confronts Randy Savage

One of the more underrated WCW storylines saw Randy Savage appearing with Sting during the early version of the Crow character. Sting didn’t align with anyone in WCW or the New World Order during this time, but Savage started appearing with him wearing all black.

Fans were unsure of what to make of either man, despite Sting’s act becoming must-watch television. There was an assumption of them starting their own group, but Savage turned fully heel to join the nWo before paying anything off with Stinger.

9 Joined By Helping Hulk Hogan's First Singles Win Over Roddy Piper

SuperBrawl 1997 was the event when Randy Savage made his decision to join the New World Order. WCW actually had a lot of hype with Roddy Piper challenging Hulk Hogan for the WCW Championship after defeating him in a previous non-title match.

Hogan never scored a singles pin fall victory over Piper on camera despite years of feuding in WWE and extending it to WCW. Savage hitting Piper with an elbow drop helped Hogan steal the victory and officially joined the group moving forward.

8 Reunited With Miss Elizabeth For First Time In WCW

A funny twist saw Miss Elizabeth joining the New World Order before Randy Savage. Both were on opposite ends of storytelling when Elizabeth turned on Savage to join the Four Horsemen, but this was reset when the nWo started.

Hulk Hogan used his old WWE friendship with Elizabeth to pressure her into joining the nWo and trying to use it to get in Savage’s head. The night after Savage joined the nWo saw Elizabeth fully embracing the group too and once again managing her ex-husband.

7 Bullying Kimberly Page Started DDP Feud

WCW rarely used their female performers in storylines during 1997 when Randy Savage and Diamond Dallas Page feuded. Their respective managers Miss Elizabeth and Kimberly Page became huge parts of the feud despite not wrestling.

The rivalry escalated when Savage revealed Kimberly’s Playboy shoot to taunt DDP and had Kimberly come out crying with NWO spray painted all over her. WCW perfectly used this storytelling device to add extra intensity before Savage and Page had their first match.

6 Rare NWO Talent To Put Over New Star With DDP

Randy Savage vs Diamond Dallas Page

The biggest complaint about the New World Order was that few wrestlers benefited from feuding against them. Diamond Dallas Page and Randy Savage had the opposite scenario unfolding when the hot act was used to put over a new star.

WCW fans organically loved Page, and his friends in the nWo wanted to improve that. Savage losing the first big PPV match to DDP basically made the latter’s career with his first win over a legend. Both wrestlers took great pride in having an all-time great WCW rivalry when it wasn’t necessarily expected.

5 Technically Caused The Wolfpac To Form

Randy Savage NWO Wolfpac

Everyone remembers the New World Order civil war storyline for Hulk Hogan leading nWo Hollywood and Kevin Nash leading the new fan favorite nWo Wolfpac. However, it was Randy Savage who technically inspired the start of the split.

Hogan growing jealous of Savage for beating Sting to become the WCW Champion and cheating Savage out of the belt one night later caused the rift. Kevin Nash was already growing unhappy with Hogan and formed the Wolfpac with Savage. An injury to Randy and Nash connecting more with the audience made fans forget Savage’s impact in this angle.

4 Bret Hart Joined By Costing Him Title

Bret Hart Hulk Hogan

WCW turned Bret Hart heel the night of the big WCW Championship match between Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage. The jealousy of Hogan saw him wanting the title at any cost. Hart costing Savage the title led to him becoming an associate of nWo Hollywood.

Original plans saw Kevin Nash and Savage as the top stars of the upcoming Wolfpac with Hogan needing Bret as his partner to even it out. However, Lex Luger and Sting joining the Wolfpac made the star power come off too big for Hart to help with.

3 Main Evented Vs Lex Luger In Between Hulk Hogan Vs Sting PPVs

Many fans believe that Randy Savage wasn’t a very important member of the New World Order since the original three and Eric Bischoff were slotted as the leaders. However, WCW used Savage in a pivotal top spot main eventing house shows, wrestling more television shows and having B tier PPV main events.

Hulk Hogan’s contract gave him a lot of time off, and it caused Savage to have to step up in those scenarios. Souled Out 1998 featured Savage vs Lex Luger as the main event in a placeholder PPV between the two bigger events before/after main evented by Hogan and Sting.

2 Ended Time In Group By Costing Eric Bischoff His Power

Ric Flair Vs Eric Bischoff

An underrated aspect of Randy Savage’s New World Order tenure was the end of his time. Eric Bischoff feuding with Ric Flair turned into an angle to have Bischoff’s power on the line. Savage was seemingly still in the nWo at the time of this match when off screen for months with an injury.

The Giant interfering to help Bischoff saw Savage arriving with an nWo shirt but tricking Giant to attack him. Savage ripped off the shirt and ensured that Flair defeated Bischoff to end his time running the show. The nWo no longer existed when Savage made his official in-ring return about four months later.

1 First Heel World Title Win Came As A Member

Randy Savage won a total of six world titles during his legendary stints in both WWE and WCW. The WWE tenure featured Savage winning the WWE Championship as a face twice, even though he did turn heel at the end of the first reign.

Savage’s first two WCW Championship reigns also came as a face. However, the first time Savage won the big one as a heel saw him beating Sting for the WCW Championship for the one-night reign. Savage had another heel title reign in 1999 to have a longer stint as the top bad guy.
