Cody Rhodes is one of the biggest names in the wrestling industry right now and someone who has enjoyed tons of success in recent years. The American Nightmare is likely going to enjoy a main-event career with WWE for many years to come, and while he's had a lot of great moments there are plenty that have had people scratching their heads.

There are situations Rhodes has been in, whether it is booking choices made for him or decisions he has taken that have created confusion only. No wrestler goes through an entire career without odd moments, and Rhodes has certainly been no exception to that.

10 WWE Not Pushing Cody Rhodes Vs. Goldust

One of the most confusing aspects of Cody Rhodes' career took place when WWE started to tease the idea of him feuding against his brother only to not commit to it. They had a brief match at Fastlane in 2015 and then things were dropped completely, which left a lot on the table.

WWE's loss ended up being AEW's gain because the two of them had one of the greatest matches in the history of Tony Khan's company. However, it was still a confusing period for Rhodes in WWE as it seemed like this was a direction only for the plug to be pulled.

9 Pulled From WrestleMania 29

WrestleMania 29 match canceled

Heading into WrestleMania 29 Cody Rhodes found himself on the card, expecting to compete in an eight-person mixed tag team match. He, Damian Sandow, and The Bella Twins were supposed to be facing Tons Of Funk, Naomi, and Cameron only for the encounter to never take place on the show.

It was a confusing situation as WWE ended up having major timing issues, despite WrestleMania being the biggest night of the year for the company. Unfortunately, it was Rhodes' match that suffered from that and they were pulled from the card completely.

8 Competing While Injured

Cody Rhodes' Hell in a Cell encounter against Seth Rollins is going to go down in WWE history due to how memorable it was, and the reason for that was the injury that the American Nightmare was dealing with. The fact he battled through the pain and competed was impressive, and it did get people talking.

However, that doesn't change the fact that it was also confusing. Fans were left wondering why he wanted to wrestle despite the serious injury, and an even bigger question was how WWE allowed him to when the situation was very serious.

7 Teaming With MJF

Everybody knows the type of character that MJF has, the fact he is the ultimate scumbag heel is part of the reason people enjoy watching him. However, it is also why most wrestlers stay away from him (in character), and tend to not want to team up with him.

Yet for some reason, Cody Rhodes spent months working alongside MJF which was a confusing situation for most. The idea that Rhodes couldn't see who MJF really was or never re-watched television to catch him doing things behind his back created a confusing storyline that wasn't a good look for Rhodes.

6 Anthony Ogogo Storyline

The entire storyline that Cody Rhodes had with Anthony Ogogo was another confusing period of his career as this was a time he was supposed to be fired up and getting the people on his side. However, this angle ended up doing the opposite as people didn't like his character's direction.

Rhodes was busy focusing on race and wider issues than wrestling which took people out of the wrestling bubble and not in a good way, which made this angle a confusing one.

5 Cosmic Wasteland Angle

Cody Rhodes' time as Stardust had some great moments, but there were also plenty of confusing spots as well, including the partnership that he had with The Ascension. The Cosmic Wasteland stable was something that seemed thrown together because WWE had no idea what to do with them.

Their promos were often confusing, discussing random aspects of the world and the galaxy, yet they never got any clear direction inside the ring. It was an odd situation and something that just didn't work, which is why the group isn't remembered by most.

4 TNT Championship Feud With Sammy Guevara

Sammy Guevara and Cody Rhodes going back and forth with the TNT Championship was confusing and something that didn't help either man. They were both getting booed and with an interim version of the title being thrown into the mix there was even more reason for people to not understand what was going on.

They competed in several ladder matches and that was supposed to bring the excitement but didn't help enhance the story. Fans were left to struggle through their segments, with this being something that shouldn't have happened.

3 Leaving AEW

A big decision that Cody Rhodes made was to leave AEW and return to WWE and while it's obvious that WWE was the draw, it is still quite confusing as to why he left. Rhodes was one of the people who created AEW, therefore the idea he'd want to leave that behind seemed odd.

There has never been a truly clear answer for this situation either which has made things even more confusing. His leaving wasn't a normal situation because he was an Executive Vice President of the entire company, which is why there still remain many question marks about it.

2 His Impact Wrestling Run

Cody Rhodes was only associated with Impact Wrestling for a brief period, and his time with them was certainly confusing. Most people thought his joining the company would lead to a big storyline or perhaps a run with the World Championship, but instead, it was a couple of quick matches and mainly defeats for him.

He failed to become World Champion and then failed at being the Grand Champion as well. Seeing Rhodes join the company with some major buzz behind him only to lose and never do anything truly meaningful.

1 Not Being Able To Win AEW's World Title

Without a doubt, the most confusing situation in Cody Rhodes' career has been the stipulation that saw him unable to win the AEW World Championship. Considering he was one of the biggest names in the company and someone who fans wanted in that spot, the decision to put a glass ceiling on his own career was an odd call.

Whether it was made by him backstage or Tony Khan himself, it's something that massively limited his time with the company. The idea that he couldn't win the title at any point stopped fans from getting behind him as much because they knew he was never going to be the top guy in AEW.
