10 Reasons Why WWE Can Never Fundamentally Change

For over 40 years, Vince McMahon has amassed a media empire! For the fans, we know how monumental an achievement that is. He was able to take regional promotion WWE and traverse the country looking for partnerships to extend not just WWE but the industry in general. Those who agreed with that vision came aboard (The Brisco brothers in Florida, Paul Boesch in Texas). Those who didn’t (Verne Gagne and Fritz Von Erich got gobbled up).

Once McMahon firmly established that empire, changing how the business gets run is just honestly bad for business; so long as the WWE keeps turning a profit. But make no missed about it, it’s not that Vince and WWE won’t change, they can’t at this point.

10 Too Many Yes Men

Pat Patterson Vince McMahon Gerald Brisco

Because of the nature of WWE and life in America, there will always be "yes men" and sycophants who suck up to their boss in hopes of getting ahead. In WWE, that can stifle creativity real fast. If you’re only writing for people that you think or you know that The Chairman likes then you’re not focused on anyone and everyone that can possibly help the company.

9 Breaking People Down

Jade Cargill TBS Champion

You hear it on just about every podcast with departing talent about how WWE loves to break people down and embarrass them to see what they could handle and what they can’t. They also practically demand fealty to the company.

In a recent Talk Is Jericho interview with Jade Cargill, she described having the WWE contract in her hand. But the company wanted her to give up practically everything that she does; including traveling with her family. The atmosphere is very “if you’re here, you’re only here” and that’s not conducive to a lot of people’s lives.

8 Answering To Corporate Masters

WWE And The Special Olympics

During the days of the Attitude Era, the WWE was supposedly on the verge of extinction and had to alter the way they do business in order to succeed. But that was 25 years ago. In the years since, the company has gone public and has cultivated all kinds of partnerships with various companies and charities worldwide. In short terms, you can’t have certain types of content when having to answer to all sorts or different partnerships that could go sour if something goes awry on WWE television that they just don’t like. After all, this is a company where if a superstar gets a new tattoo without approval it could upend all sorts of plans.

7 Formulaic To Ensure Profits

The Miz Posing

Besides cutting “dead weight,” as Vince McMahon said during his interview with Pat McAfee to free up some funds, the WWE can’t really deviate from how they operate. Otherwise, profits could decrease. While certainly no one in WWE could be that self-conscious of failure, the WWE style of wrestling has been part of the company since it’s inception and besides ensuring that Vince McMahon and the WWE keep succeeding, the safer style of working does allow for fewer injuries. That’s great for the performers injury-wise and company wise so that they invest their time properly into superstars, but it doesn’t allow for a lot of creativity.

6 Inconsistent Storytelling

Big E Annoyed

The storylines in WWE just flat out don’t make a lot of sense at times, and it makes it harder and harder for fans to get behind superstars. Big E loses the WWE Title and instead of demanding a rematch or some sort of chance to get it back, he simply gets drafted to SmackDown and put back into The New Day - don’t you think the guy might want his title back?

That’s just one storyline, however we all know it happens all the time - has Heyman explained yet why he turned on Brock and went back to Roman who fired him in the first place?

5 Vince McMahon Doesn’t See Any Issues…

…and to be fair, how could he? The company generates more money than a small country and amasses all kinds of partnerships like with the USA and Fox networks. They have a gazillion dollar contract to bring shows to Saudi Arabia. NBC paid them to bring the WWE Network over to Peacock, that’s just a small fraction of the money that the company pulls in; that’s not even including the revenue from ticket and merchandise sales! Looking at the bottom line and seeing it increase every year makes it very hard for the people in charge to see any chinks in the armor.

4 “Vocal Minority”

NXT 2.0 Logo

If you’re offended by the term Vocal Minority, you might just be part of the Vocal Minority; after all, you’re reading this article, aren’t you? Just look at packed houses all across the WWE Universe. Even more of a microcosm, look at the shift from NXT to NXT 2.0. There is all this negative chatter from the Internet Wrestling Community and other die-hard fans, and yet the Performance Center has been packed every week. The passionate fans that speak out against the product just don’t outweigh the paying customers.

3 For The Brand

Adam Cole

WWE likes to control every aspect of its company and of course they should, any company would want to. But for a creative company like WWE, that can stifle some of that creativity. When you’re with WWE, you’re with them “4 Life.” Case in point - wrestlers like Adam Cole not only left because they didn’t like the creative offered to them but had zero interest in altering his Twitch account. When you’re part of WWE, you’re part of their brand and nothing else matters.

2 Independent Contractors

Zelina Vega

To piggyback off of the last entry, two of the dirtiest words in wrestling is “Independent Contractor.” It nearly started a feud with the government and the Screen Actors Guild when Zelina Vega refused to abandon her social channels. After all, she called out the double standard - guys like Xavier Woods are allowed to have them.

But how WWE qualifies their wrestlers is what is up for debate here. These guys bust their chops nearly 300 days a year, and they’re not even considered employees. Why they’re not considered employees is because it allows the WWE’s bottom line to flourish - they save a ton of money not having to pay them 401K’s and insurance.

1 An Audience Of One

Vince McMahon Tyranasaur

Hulk Hogan. Bret. Shawn. Taker. Austin. Rock. Cena. Roman. Triple H. Orton. More often than not, Vince’s track record is filled with more success than failure; otherwise they still wouldn’t be in business if it was the other way around. It’s such an obvious number one, but it's so every important. The WWE is for an audience of one and that’s Vince McMahon. If he doesn’t like an idea or an angle, it gets squashed. If he wants to see something on TV no matter how ridiculous, it will be seen (listen to Bruce Prichard, his right-hand man talk about Katie Vick). When you own a multi-billion dollar global entertainment powerhouse you get to make all the decisions.
