10 Most Convincing Liars In WWE History

To be a great wrestler it is helpful to be a capable liar, or at the very least a good actor. Lying is an essential part of the business on camera and behind the scenes which makes it such a brutal industry.

WWE characters have often fooled fans and fellow wrestlers into believing certain things are true which is a credit to their manipulative powers. Other performers will simply lie without meaning too, making people think things about them that actually are not very true.

10 Daniel Bryan

Arrogant Planet's Champion

Bryan was one of the biggest babyfaces within WWE of the 21st Century as the ‘Yes Movement’ took over the company. However, as a heel, he was among the most mean and manipulative performers that fans had seen for some time.

This was especially true for his ‘Planet’s Champion’ character as he had to convince everyone to turn on him after only coming out of retirement earlier that year. He managed this by cheating against AJ Styles to win the WWE Championship, showing his true colours as a self-righteous and arrogant figure.

9 CM Punk

Making Fans Believe In Anything He Wanted Them To

“The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.” That is exactly what CM Punk did for large parts of his WWE (and AEW) career, as even when he was a babyface he clearly had something sinister lurking beneath him.

Punk was one of the greatest WWE heels of the century too, which took some convincing as fans were always drawn to him. With his promo ability and in-ring storytelling prowess, he managed to make fans believe anything which is a testament to how great of a performer CM Punk is.

8 Randy Orton

The Viper Luring Partners Into A False Sense Of Security

Randy-Orton

It is unsurprising that someone nicknamed 'The Viper' is untrustworthy with Randy Orton being a complete snake even when he is acting as a face. He has made a career out of hitting people with RKO's out of nowhere, which is very emblematic of how he can seemingly just snap at any moment.

Orton has often lured fellow performers into a false sense of security before turning on them, with one notable example being when he infiltrated and dismantled the Wyatt Family from the inside. He probably would have done the same with Riddle had he not exited the company a few months ago while Randy was out injured.

7 Chris Jericho

Turning On His Hero Shawn Michaels

Chris Jericho World Champion

Another legend of the business who has routinely turned on his fellow wrestlers in order to get ahead, Chris Jericho is a master of pulling the wool over the fans' eyes. Jericho has used heel turns to further the direction of his character on several occasions, as throughout his career he has always been better as a bad guy.

The backstabbing he delivered to his hero Shawn Michaels on the infamous edition of the Highlight Reel was great, as Y2J threw HBK into the 'Jeritron.' This was paid back to Jericho a decade later as Kevin Owens brutally turned on him in the same way during the 'Festival of Friendship.'

6 Mr. McMahon

Not Delivering On His Promises To Wrestlers & Fans

The extent to which Vince McMahon has lied in real life is a discussion in itself, but even as a television character, he was one of the most untrustworthy and ruthless individuals in wrestling history. All the broken promises he delivered on screen to wrestlers and fans alike are as terrible as it is kind of funny, as people kept believing his word.

Even when he let people down repeatedly, fans would still cheer for the chairman of the board whenever 'No Chance In Hell' blared around the arena. It is really strange that he was let off with so much even from a kayfabe perspective, as after the year 2000 he hardly ever delivered on what he promised.

5 The Miz

Making People Believe He's Better Than He Actually Is

The Miz is one of the most successful WWE wrestlers of all time, particularly in terms of his longevity and career accomplishments. In terms of his actual in-ring credentials and promo ability, he has been vastly overrated for a long time though, which is actually a testament to Miz's ability to convince fans otherwise.

Sure, he can cut the odd fired-up promo or have an occasional four-star match, but on the whole, he has been bang average for almost two decades. When the time is right, The Miz will inflate his quality to such a degree by listing his career highlights like he is in a job interview, which somehow makes people believe he is a real threat inside the ring once again.

4 Bray Wyatt

Lying To Fans In His Promos

The way that Bray Wyatt could command his legion of followers was unlike anything fans have seen from this generation of performers in wrestling. His cult leader status was more than just a character as even when WWE repetitively mishandled Wyatt he kept his 'Fireflies' on the hook.

A lot of what he said was absolute lies, but fans wanted to believe him because he had such an aura around him whenever he feuded with huge stars like John Cena, The Undertaker, and Daniel Bryan. He even made it to the top of the industry on a couple of occasions purely through his own relationship with the audience, as even when WWE did not believe in him the fans did.

3 Triple H

Manipulating Others To Help Him Stay On Top

Triple H WrestleMania 18

'The Game' made a name for himself in wrestling by being duplicitous on screen and behind the scenes, which has led him to be a fourteen-time world champion and granted him the position he is in today. As the leader of various factions and a perennial main event star, Triple H used his power to manipulate his allies and opponents alike to great success.

His time spent as the leader of Evolution during the 'Reign of Terror' was Triple H operating at his egotistical best (or worst), where he condescended and lied to get his way for several years. Not every fan will like Triple H for how his character was presented throughout these years or even the way he behaved in real life, but it can't be denied that it was tremendously effective.

2 Roman Reigns

Manipulating His Own Family To Achieve Success

The 'Tribal Chief' has become a monolith atop WWE with his reign as world champion now extending to well over 1000 days. He has done so by building an empire around him which allows Roman the protection he needs to become the most successful performer of the modern era.

He has built up this record-breaking run by being an egomaniacal supervillain, as he has lied, manipulated, and gaslit his way to find incomparable success. Reigns has controlled his family through fear and subjugated the entire WWE roster who have been unable to dethrone the 'Head of the Table.'

1 Paul Heyman

Hiding Behind The Most Powerful Wrestlers

Paul Heyman in The Bloodline

Sometimes it's the man behind the monster who is actually the most dastardly, which has been the case for Paul Heyman throughout his career. Whether he is hiding behind Roman Reigns or Brock Lesnar, Heyman has been getting away with verbal attacks on other WWE wrestlers for decades.

Heyman can essentially say whatever he wants, true or not, and not face any repercussions as he is shielded by his clients and his own cowardice. In terms of a heel manager, there has been nobody like the former ECW owner in the history of the business that can get away with so much.
