10 Major Champions Of WWE's Ruthless Aggression Era: Where Are They Now?

The Ruthless Aggression Era was a period in WWE that lasted between May 2002 and July 2008 and was the last known timeframe that saw the company produce edgier content before going PG. The era saw the rise of newer stars like John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista, and Brock Lesnar, who would go on to reach legendary status in the company.

Wrestling fans witnessed WWE put on some of the greatest storylines in history during this era and saw several high-profile title reigns that contributed to its success. With that said, let's take a look at the ten major champions of the Ruthless Aggression Era and where they are at present.

10 Rob Van Dam

WWE paid equal attention to the mid-card and tag team titles during the Ruthless Aggression Era, and Rob Van Dam was one of the many superstars who benefited from the booking.

The high-flying superstar dominated the mid-card title picture throughout the era and won five Intercontinental Championships, one European Championship, and three tag team championships. He also broke out as a main event star and won the MITB ladder match and cashed it in to become the WWE Champion and became the first ECW Champion when WWE reactivated ECW as a separate brand in 2005. Rob Van Dam continued to perform across various promotions over the years and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021. He is currently signed to All Elite Wrestling and has had two matches for the company so far.

9 Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho entered the Ruthless Aggression Era fresh after making history by becoming the first-ever Undisputed WWE Champion. While he didn't have much luck in reclaiming the world titles, Jericho made sure he stayed on top in the mid-card title picture and won the Intercontinental Championship four times during the period.

He also held the World Tag Team Championship with Christian on one occasion and had a firm placement in the spotlight throughout the era. He left the company in 2005 and returned in 2007 and continued with the same momentum and captured the World Heavyweight Championship at the start of the PG Era. He had multiple stints with WWE over the years before signing with All Elite Wrestling in 2019, where he continues to perform to this date.

8 Mickie James

Mickie James made her WWE main roster debut in October 2005 as Trish Stratus' biggest fan, which eventually turned out into an entertaining storyline. It resulted in James capturing her first WWE Women's Championship as she defeated Stratus to win the title at WrestleMania 22.

She continued to be a vital part of the women's division throughout the Ruthless Aggression Era and won the women's title three more times. She continued her successful run across various promotions following the era and is currently part of the Impact Wrestling roster, where she is a former 5-time Knockouts Champion.

7 Trish Stratus

Trish Stratus was one of the biggest female stars in WWE throughout the Ruthless Aggression Era. She made her debut during the final stages of the Attitude Era in 2000 and walked into the Ruthless Aggression Era with a women's title reign to her name.

She went on to win the women's championship six more times during the period, including a reign that lasted an impressive 448 days. She spent her entire in-ring career in WWE and retired in 2006 before taking her rightful place in the Hall of Fame in 2013. While she made several sporadic appearances for WWE following her first retirement, she returned to full-time wrestling for WWE in 2023 and had a lengthy feud with Becky Lynch.

6 Brock Lesnar

Brock Lesnar was the biggest break-out star during the initial stages of the Ruthless Aggression Era. WWE booked him as the next big thing in the company following his debut in March 2002 and followed it up by having him defeat The Rock at SummerSlam 2002 to become the youngest WWE Champion in history.

He dominated the world title picture and had two more runs with the WWE Championship before leaving the company in 2004. He tried his luck in pro football before making it big in MMA and returned to WWE in 2012. Since then, he's been competing in a part-time schedule for the company and has won seven more world championships. His recent match was against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam 2023, and it's possible he'd be back in time for the 2023 Crown Jewel PLE.

5 Batista

The Animal Batista made his WWE debut in May 2002 as Deacon Batista, the heel enforcer for Reverend D-Von. The gimmick lasted for a while before Batista moved on to become part of Triple H's Evolution faction alongside Ric Flair and Randy Orton.

His alliance with Evolution turned his career around as he soon broke out as a main event singles performer and won the 2005 Royal Rumble. He defeated Triple H to win his first World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 21. He had three runs with the world title during the era and also held three tag team championships, and was one of the faces of the company at the time. Batista retired from in-ring competition following his match against Triple H at WrestleMania 35 and might get inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2024. He made a successful transition into Hollywood and has become quite successful in his acting career, as his involvement with the MCU as Drax the Destroyer catapulted him into superstardom.

4 Randy Orton

Randy Orton also broke out as a main event star in WWE during the Ruthless Aggression Era after being a part of the Evolution faction. He started with a lengthy Intercontinental Championship run before becoming the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in history at SummerSlam 2004. He had two runs with the WWE Championship during the era, including an impressive 203-day run. While he went on to win more world titles in the future, the Ruthless Aggression Era gave him the perfect start, which made him into the legend he is today.

He continued to perform for WWE over the years and is currently out of action after sustaining a back injury in 2022, but was recently spotted at the WWE Performance Center, which has sparked rumors of a potential return.

3 Edge

After spending the entirety of the Attitude Era as a tag team and mid-card competitor, Edge broke out into the main event picture during the Ruthless Aggression Era following his heel turn in 2004.

He won the inaugural MITB ladder match and won his first WWE Championship in 2006. He went on to have five world title reigns throughout the Ruthless Aggression Era and was one of the company's top heels. Following his in-ring return in 2020, Edge continued to perform for WWE before signing with AEW in 2023, where he currently performs under his real name, Adam Copeland.

2 John Cena

The Ruthless Aggression Era saw John Cena make his iconic WWE debut against Kurt Angle in June 2002. From there, Cena went on to become the face of WWE, dominated the world title picture for many years, and tied Ric Flair's record by winning 16 world titles.

He won three WWE Titles, three United States Titles, and one Tag Team Championship during the Ruthless Aggression Era and cemented his legacy as one of the all-time greats. He transitioned into Hollywood and found success as an actor, and is currently in the middle of another WWE run due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

1 Triple H

Triple H continued his dominant Attitude Era run in the Ruthless Aggression Era and dominated the world championship picture during the period. He had his infamous reign of terror at the start of the era and held a death grip on the World Heavyweight Championship.

He had five runs with the world title and had two runs with the WWE Championship in the Ruthless Aggression Era and was part of several high-profile storylines throughout the period. The Game slowly transitioned into a backstage role in the later stages of his career, and is currently retired from in-ring action and has taken over as WWE's Chief Content Officer.
